Declan Marshall

Ferguson pulled off a great signing with Marshall from Nottingham Forest for £100k. The attacking midfielder was a first team regular for Forest last season and the fans were bemused with Michael Duff selling a first team regular to Fylde. The midfielder started out at Doncaster Rovers before leaving for Blackburn and then onto Celtic in the 2019/20 season but failed to make an impact in Scotland. The midfielder was overjoyed to sign for Fylde and join up with a prosperous manager and team.

Andrew Jolley

FERGUSON: THIS IS OUR HARDEST CHALLENGE

Duncan Ferguson took the time out to write an article for the AFC Fylde official website.

"First of all, I want to thank you all for your continued support. It has been felt all around the country and in every division we have played in. Last season was incredible and nobody expected us to win the league trophy but we proved how dynamic we are as a football club and now we embark on our biggest challenge yet. The Championship is going to be a tough ride but if everyone knuckles down and works hard we can cement our place in this division and build for the future. We have to work with the resources we have at the club and there are wealthy clubs in this division with a lot more buying power but we have an incredible team spirit and a unity that money cannot buy. We are not here to make the numbers up, we are AFC Fylde and we deserve to be here. When the news broke that our magnificent stadium was being developed I was saddened to learn that our fans would not be experiencing Mill Farm in all it's glory in The Championship but to the fans who can join us this season at Accrington, we will work hard to not let you down. We know it is an inconvenience for many of you but each and every one of you are in our hearts and we aim to bring back the points each week and when Mill Farm opens again, we will be competing at this level with you all there to witness futher success and glory. UTC!"

West Bromich Albion vs AFC Fylde

What a momentous occasion for AFC Fylde with an opening trip to The Hawthorns playing in front of 25,000 spectators. Vince Bytheway lined up against his former club and Charley Coe made his debut in a three man midfield. Duncan Ferguson was in pursuit of Charlie Dootson this summer but West Brom's valuation was too much for Ferguson. The midfielder started on the bench. Fylde were defending well in the first 20 minutes, Billy Gilmour was trying to carve open the back line but Fylde held the line and kept West Brom limited to chances. Tyler Garrett threw the ball to Wisdom who played it back to Garrett, he got it to Coe who done well to get by the area and find O'Neill on the edge of the box, he tried a good shot towards the top right corner and the keeper tipped it over. Wisdom with the corner from the right hand side, swung into the six yard box and Bytheway heads in! Fylde with the lead! An incredible header! West Brom hit back on 40 minutes, Dean Plant had his initial shot saved but was there to follow up and beat Tom Hadler to make it 1-1. Gilmour got the ball out wide to Griffin on 45 minutes, he crossed into the box low for Dominic Calvert-Lewin who never misses these chances and puts The Baggies in front. West Brom were looking good in possession, Gilmour played it forward for Calvert-Lewin to chase on 55 minutes but Alan O'Neill got across to take the ball but the referee pointed to the spot! Sharman took the penalty and put it to the bottom right but Hadler palmed it away! Great save! Fylde still in with a chance to get something from this and Brett McGavin was replaced by Declan Marshall on 56 minutes, Marshall making his debut for Fylde. Marshall showed some good touches and got a shot away but blazed over the bar. Jamieson was on at right back and Ferguson pushed his team forward in the last 15 minutes. Time was ticking down and we rolled into stoppage time. 91 minutes played and Fylde had a free-kick. Wisdom whipped it towards the far post and Bytheway leaped high to head into the bottom corner! 2-2! What a goal! Less than a minute to play, can Fylde steal a winner? Charley Coe looked exceptional in the middle and was winning tackles and creating attacking moves, he got it out wide to Bytheway, Bytheway lobs it into the box and Marshall chases it down but the keeper comes out and takes the ball. The final whistle goes and what a good result for Fylde who everyone expected to lose. Bytheway coming back to haunt his former club.

DF: West Brom are a top side and really controlled the game but with a few tweaks in the second half we turned it round and worked hard for a draw. I'm pleased to get a point against one of the league's best and we can build on that with confidence.
