Thats what I do for a shepherds pie. Never occurred to me to try it with sommet else. Might have a play with that. Does it work with beef mince/meat balls?
Everything sauce gravy based mate. The flavour is there but you wouldn't know they were in there.Add more breadcrumbs to meatball mix though.

When we do meatballs with some pasta, we use a red wine, cinnamon, garlic type sauce to cook them, once they are fried off as balls.

Not sure if a celery based sauce would work better if I am honest.

Try it the 3 are known as the Holy Trinity of Italian cuisine. With a title like that it's got to be worth a try. lol
 

Usually go to chippie for fish & chips but can't face queueing in the cold today. Make do with a tin of Sausages and spaghetti in tomato sauce, on toasted muffins, with a couple of mini pork pies.
