The problem is the fee

We paid 'finished article' money for him and got an U21 player
Agree. He’s got a lot of potential I think but doesn’t get into the team ahead of any of our current front 3. I thought when we signed him he was probably coming to be the main man but he’s not ready yet.

I remember when everyone was saying something similar about DCL.

He has just turned 20. Played and scored for both Juve and Italy. He must have something about him.

Was he good enough last night? Absolutely not. But equally, it wasn't till that final flurry that he got any form of decent service and then he could have been sitting on a hatrick. Playing with your back to goal against physical league two defenders is always going to be a challenge.

I was glad he took the penalty. At that point he was still having a very poor game and a missed penalty would have compounded that. Nice to see someone with a desire to play a part. Less could be said about some of our senior pros.

The difference is though DCL is a target man, and showed those aspects to his game when he came. Target men tend to mature as footballers as they learn the game etc. It's rare you see one burst on to the scene as a youngster, they get better with age. The more explosive strikers are the ones who burst on at a younger age, and then gradually decline. That's why some of us always felt DCL had potential, cos he showed a lot of positive signs that he was impoving.

People are saying in this thread that Kean is not a target man, in fact we saw last night he is miles away from being one. I've heard people saying that he needs the ball in to space to run on to, or for him even to be able to control the ball. Nothing about his game suggests he is going to improve. If anything I'd say he peaked early as a teenager in the younger age groups, as he was likely bigger and stronger than most. Because of that he has deficiencies in his game which at this level are highlighted massively. He hasn't shown any improvement in them which possibly suggests he's too far gone to learn those aspects. Lukaku is a decent comparison, cos of his size as a teenager, he didn't learn hold up play either. The difference was, Lukaku was a lot better at it than Kean is and Lukaku also has a mad desire to improve.

As a club if Everton can get money for Kean, they'd be better off doing it and starting again with someone more suited, before his value drops.

Imagine we had a kid who scores every time he starts. We would be made up would we.............
If he could translate that to his sub appearances it would be great. Just being able to find half a yard and putting it in the net would be absolutely brilliant for now, and I would be saying it's fine we can work on his all round game but for now he's a great impact sub. The problem is he doesn't. He only scores when he starts, but his all round game is so bad that the goal isn't really enough to justify the start in most cases. It's a genuine quandary; he is clearly talented, but there's no excuse for some of the truly awful stuff he serves up at times. He must be a nightmare to play with because he just doesn't do the basics half the time. It's pretty obvious that the coaches feel that way I think, hence the 3 starts you mention being spread over 9 months.

I think this is one of the worst posts I’ve ever seen. Im not a footballer, but I could do that with no pressure on me and a ball floated at me with loads of time to prepare. What fans are commenting on here is his ability to control the ball under pressure when players are drilling it into him. He takes about five touches to get it under control. He has no room and he has to use skill to be able to do it.
And you mentioned james putting the ball in for him. I’m fairly sure if you go through his player cam from the Tottenham game, you see him drilling it into Kean in the last few minutes in a good position. But guess what happens.....he miscontrols it......

I'm not saying you're wrong but you couldnt do it

I know he scored the penalty but the show boating run up is embarrasing. Great when it goes in but he'll just look a tit when one doesn't. I wouldn't lose any sleep if we got shut as I think it will be some time before he shows any consistent quality as he clearly not going to be a first choice selection.

I read that as a kid trying to build his confidence by trying to look confident. No big deal.
