Well that's not what I mean though. And honestly you can take Spurs off that list before last summer because it was only then that they went into the "try and buy players who can instantly make an impact at huge prices" strategy. Even then Lo Celso and Ndombele aren't old.

What I do mean is that we can't look at City or the RS and say "they bought a bunch of players in their prime so that is the way." There are certainly lessons to take from each side, most notably the way they committed to buying the players that fit the managers preferred system and style of play, but the actual transfer strategy was essentially to buy the best player that fit the requirements and that really isn't something we can do as the best players aren't coming here.
Allison....prime
Van Dyyk...prime
Mane...prime
Salah...prime

Dont get where you're coming from.

Ederson...prime
Aguero...prime
De Bruyne...prime

These arnt youngsters they are bought to play in a system straight away.

Every successful team does it.

If we can find players better then we currently have then we can improve too.
It isn't about improving as simply improving isn't super difficult but rather improving enough. We can bring in Allan, Willian and Thiago Silva (in theory) and we will be well better but we still won't be in the CL and it is pretty doubtful that those players will be here long enough to build an entire squad that will. And that's a big leap to assume we can even attract them.

We need to play the longer game. Pick a style of play that works, commit to buying players who fit that style, make the players we buy a combination of talented youngsters we can develop, undervalued players entering their prime and the occasional older but still good player on the cheap, and build continuity within the team by having the same core playing the same style for multiple years and we might just get close.

You don't get where I'm coming from when I say we shouldn't build our strategy around being able to buy Van Dijk or De Bruyne level players in their prime?

This is what it boils down to, we need some players that can improve this awful team right now, we are in dire straights Carlo isn't getting any younger and I honestly cannot see him developing a player from 22 for the player to then get taken off us at 24 by an elite club, pointless.

As a Napoli fan here I loved Allan a couple of seasons ago when he was playing in the Sarri team a bit more forward midfield but can see him being a bit more like Schneiderlin than idrissa for us sadly. However in Ancelotti I trust.

Thats where many will disagree.

Silva, Willian and possibly Allan improve this team, I mean I cant claim to have seen Allan so cant be sure.

But you seem to think we are a million miles away from competing.

I strongly disagree.

And I also disagree that signing World Class players doesn't improve us enough.

When you look in the dugout.

Is that not what most people want. A mixture of players coming in of different ages and ability that will improve us

If youve got the money , you've got to buy the absolute very best you can.
You cant wait and grab a bargain to hope they progress these days.

FWIW i really do like Allan everything i want in a combative midfielder which we really are sadly lacking.
I would love him and the other Napoli lad Fabian Ruiz , transforms our midfield 100 fold. Two propper players.

No, he wants us to build a team that can compete in 2023.

Its a great idea and if we were a MLS franchise it might just work.

But a team who shares a City with a team who has just won everything? Waiting 3 years to compete? Nope, it will never catch on.

Im not saying he's wrong, its probably the easier way, but its pretty impossible to achieve.

Young players who we can improve (Richarlison style or DCL style), undervalued players entering their prime (Digne), older bargains (Delph was an attempt at this, Gareth Barry is a good example). Is that not a mix?

The problem is we all know as soon as a player get to CL level he will get taken by a bigger club and then we are back to square one.
