Club Statement: Coronavirus

I watch UK Sky news and BBC news every day and I wasn't aware of that. Are you sure that planes are still flying in to Britain? I know that I can't go there.
I was going to the Bournemouth match next month before this all kicked off.

A couple two doors down from me have recently been living and working in Milan. They flew home, walked straight though as normal, with people coughing and spluttering around them, one week after the Liverpool Euro game. They were really really shocked. Less checks then than in normal times.

I agree with your daughter that it is risky. My daughter has already said that she won't be sending our kids back, but she is in a difficult position with her job. There will be plenty of people who are willing to send their kids back, so she feels she has to go in. I understand there have been some calls for a teachers strike, but that is only likely to be more divisive. Hopefully the powers that be will reconsider.

Most people who have died in care homes would have died anyway. Coronavirus is a notifiable disease meaning that the government has to be informed even if that person died of something else. The first report into the make up of the people who have died published last week found that people with diabetes, heart failure, overweight and aged where found to be in the majority. And from that most would have died early anyway like I said. 4 million died worldwide in 1968 from Hong Kong flu. Nothing closed down. 2014 there was an excess of 40000 people who died in the uk due to the cold weather. No one battered an eye. No stories of individual people in the paper. For me and this is a personal view this has been a massive over reaction. That is not to say that it is a tragedy to any family who loses a loved one because it is. But hardly any people under 50 have died. The vast majority are over 60 with underlying problems so like I said most would have died anyway
Sorry don't agree with some of this.
I do agree that the majority of people in care homes will die, as that is the nature of a care home. But to be taken out with such horrible illness that can take weeks to kill is not the norm. My father in law died of this and was horrible to see. He had all his flu jabs and the like but this still killed him. He'd be here today if it wasn't for CV. Could have died in few months time but this definitely killed him before his time. Saying most people with underlying health issue will die is like saying everyone will die one day so it's ok. It's not ok taking anyone before their time.

The ONS released figures for up to 10th April and they said the average deaths in the UK up to then was up 8000 on the previous 5 years average. How many reported CV deaths on 10th April? 8000.

The mistake a lot are making (I don't necessarily mean you) is they are comparing this with flu. This is not flu. Nothing like it. We mostly have immunity from flu which is why we can run with it each year. Some years are worse than others granted. Nobody had immunity from CV. This is no way an overreaction at all.

I hear and I believe that the most effective way of avoiding infection has been social distancing, and that should be easy to arrange in classrooms when
you think about it, especially with so many mums and dads keeping their kids at home. We're in Victoria and online school with video call is the way things are going now. I hope they're having more luck with it than I'm having with my 96 year old mam in aged care. . Your daughter will be OK.

Most flights are cargo. But lots of flights to get Brits home. 7000 from India last week. Looking to get thousands home from Pakistan and Bangladesh in the next few days

OK, I get it now, we're doing the same thing in Australia - getting expats home. I thought you meant flying in tourists, etc.

I'm not comparing it with flu. Some people who have the flu jab still die each year. It mutates every year that's why you need a new jab every year. If you go into hospital with covid it is a horrible death. Like lots of other illness like cancer, my argument and I stress this is a personal view is that it has been an.over reaction to it. The vast majority of people who.have died have had underlying conditions and over 70. The government identified 1.5 million who needed to be shielded. This should have been the people in lockdown. BBC and sky only report the bad news on covid. There are quite a few prominent people querying why lockdown is happening but it dosnt realty get reported by the media. If it carries on it will crash the economy with millions unemployment. The OBR today days the government are borrowing massive amounts. And it has only just started.
They went into lockdown due to a report by professor Neil Ferguson from imperial college who said half a million would die in the UK if we didn't go into lockdown. The next day the government imposed lockdown. Give a look at that professors recent predictions. I'll give you 2 to start off with
2005 he said 200 million would due with bird flu. 282 people died worldwide
2009 he said 65000 in the UK would due with swine flu. 457 died in the UK. And this is who convinced the government to go into lockdown

One of the suggestions is to msimply have a PPG model to finish off the season:

If they do decide to end the season, suspect that suggestion will be thrown out the window

While population density will undoubtedly have played a part, the real reasons for Australia's much better situation re the pandemic are more to do with their rapid response in comparison to the dithering approach from our Government.
To date Australia currently has one of highest per capita testing rates in the world.
Less than 7000 tests have been made in Australia up to now.

I definitely read the bit about Australia having the highest per capita testing rates somewhere this morning but I now can't find the source.
The 2 quotes below however are from today's Daily Mail
"Meanwhile in Australia, thousands of tests are being carried out every day, but huge swathes of the country have not recorded any new infections.
"Drive-through test clinics have also made it easy for worried citizens to get checked out."[/QUOTE]

They have tested more people than we have
