Goodison in the 1980s

This game I'm.on about was a Saturday game against United. Early 70s. I was only young. Remember a huge mob of Everton fans walking past Great homer street market. Also one of the first times on the telly look north I think and they had a report on the trouble. My first aways were Burnley and villa. Not much trouble. Then Leeds away first game I think 73 was an eye opener. Think we took about 4 or 5 specials. Out the station into an escort with about 200 Leeds in front of us. Every now and then a charge and they legged it. After the game a huge mob of Everton and every now and then running back to the station although I never saw any Leeds fans. Loads of kids getting whacked by the police. After that violence was regular at home and away games.
That was my first away. Baptism of fire. Straight out the station and clash with Leeds under the railway bridge.
They never came near until after the match.
Remember everyone chanting why don’t you come to Goodson as hardly anyone brought fans to us in the 70’s. Also remember a few times a few hundred of the St End would run across the pitch at half time into the Park End.

When you watch older games on youtube or where ever, you dont see many teams with big away support, even for Fa cup games which were important in them days,it looks like with the odd exception it was mainly the four big Northwest teams that had a decent following

Thing was with Leeds is they would take loads to the the rs and Utd but hardly any to us.

London teams never brought anyone until about 76 when they got escorts to and from the ground. Went to all aways from about 72 till 86. Never big following to london in the mid 70s But always a thousand or more even more to the likes of qpr. Remember west ham on the coach early 70s. About 300 on coaches. No police at the coach park. West ham most have put every window through before a couple of coppers arrived ha

Never saw many leeds at goodison in the 70s. They go on about having a massive mob first game of the season think in 81. Dont remember but that's when they started coming to goodison in the 80s. Legends in their own mind leeds! They used to smash up small places like Bournemouth but nothing against us, RS city and United

Its weird though that a couple of clubs have always had away support, yet others never did, except for maybe a handful,Burnley for example never used to have any support at Goodison and thats a short journey,I dont remember any Midlands clubs bringing fans with them either, with the exception of the rs and United, the only other I remember filling the park end was Sunderland when they got relegated,a couple of days before that we played Newcastle and I doubt there was more than a coachload of them

Remember Aston villa bringing a large following in the fa cup mid 70s. Gave it loads in the park end. Lost 4-1 and then all left 20 mins from the end leaving a huge gap. Birmingham came not long after and also left 20 mins or when the gates open. Up by county road where Weatherspoons is now they sprayed Birmingham fc on a wall. It was there for a while.

I remember the game,Rimmer was outstanding in goal,Clive Thomas the ref, dont remember there being that many Villa though,Id say a couple of 1000 at the very most, certainly not the whole park end terrace

They had a decent following for the semi in 84, pretty lively afterwards iirc.

I started going in the boys pen in about the mid1950s and was mostly in there until I graduated to the big boys in the Gwladys. I honestly don't remember any trouble in the pen and never felt unsafe.
There wasn't much, if any trouble anywhere round the ground up until I stopped going at the end of 1960 - to Oz - unless my memory's playing tricks.
I do remember that there was a lot of trouble on trains to and from aways, though. We blamed Reds and they blamed us.
Never saw the logic in that, but there you go.
I had my wooly hat pinched in there, barstads, never forget it, mental scars to this day.

So is this after the game had started. Always thought it must have been early doors as no fans around

The game I was on about earlier - it was all taking place while the game was being played during the first half! Quietened down a bit after half time by which time they had been largely chucked out!

Nah they had the Rh side nr the enclosure. We were next to them in the park end.

Very lively. Big following from them. But they got hammered before and after the game. What a following from us in the return fixture. Loads on their pitch after the game
