Cancelling this season's Premier League

Should football be canceled until August and this season declared null and void?

Footballers at Germany's top teams including Bayern Munich have agreed to take pay cuts to help clubs survive the economic impact of the coronavirus, media reports said Tuesday.

Newspaper Bild reports that players and club officials at champions Bayern, top of the Bundesliga when the Bundesliga season was halted on 13 March, have accepted a 20% cut in their salaries.

Like all top European leagues the German top flight is losing income from broadcasting, sponsorships and ticket sales during the Covid-19 pandemic, with matches in Germany suspended until at least 2 April.

so Boris said that gatherings of more than 2 people are banned

last time i checked you need more than 2 people to play a match of footy

i know this is only a temporary 3 week measurement but it could last longer

Italy are only now, nearly 3 weeks in starting to slow the death rate to 10% (so hundreds a day). Thats with full quarantine though, not our half baked way of doing it. There is no talk of them rescinding it, in fact people want it rolled out for longer.

The other point to bear in mind with this, is that there is also a big gap between full lockdown, and sporting events to go ahead (even behind closed doors). It's possible some shops may be allowed to open, but sporting events remain a no go area.

I think this lockdown, at the level we are at lasts 3-4 weeks as a minimum starting point. We are already at mid April by that point.

In a statement, the International Olympic Committee said: "The IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community."

LOL.

How would the ‘two metre’ rule be implemented? The virus will always be there until a vaccine is found surely.

What i dont get is that doesnt the virus need a human host to keep living? I knew it can live on metal and cardboard etc for a few hours but thats it. If social distancing and a lockdown went on for long enough and every patient recovered and there were no new infections, wouldnt the disease die out completely?

I understand the chances of that happening are minimal of course.

Or is the virus thriving elsewhere and unless there is a cure made, then it will always come back?

It’s zoonotic so it can always have an animal host ie a bat so it’s always going to be around somewhere (bubonic plague still exists in animals in China). You also can’t account for people lying about symptoms, still being entirely uneducated on protocol and what to do or just choosing to totally ignore advice.

The virus like pretty much every unvaccinated illness in history isn’t going to go anywhere but it can just be controlled and contained as things like MERS and Ebola were. You’re always going to get reinfections and many countries will have spikes in cases in the coming months as they all go back to work. It’s just there to be contained and controlled as much as it can and hopefully they can develop a vaccine.

Pandemics end when the virus doesn't have enough susceptible people to infect.

"If the virus comes into contact with another person but that person isn't susceptible to the disease, then that chain of transmission is snuffed out. If one person infects two, those people together infect four and so on, and eventually, the virus runs out of susceptible people to infect, said Joshua Epstein, a professor of epidemiology at New York University. "What happens typically is that enough people get the bug that there just aren't enough susceptible people to keep the chain going."

So what you're saying is there will always be Liverpool fans?

There's really no other option than to void the premier league. If people are only being allowed out for essential things now, I fail to see how people who are already millionaires need to actually go out and play games. Giving Liverpool the title would create too much confusion for clubs in promotion places in the lower leagues and it would also be a hollow victory for the RS. The moron in the Echo at the weekend who actually thought the season is going to continue is badly deluded. As somebody said the anger from the public that emergency resources were being pointlessly wasted for football matches would create a toxic situation. Nobody is going to care about a Everton v Liverpool match behind closed doors, it's basically a training game. not a serious game for the title. I don't know why they just don't void it.
