As Maynard Keynes said there lies , damn lies and statistics
When will people realize this quote is criticizing people and not statistics? Not today, it appears.
Not exactly but you're closer.Don't think it was Keynes who said this and the correct version is there are 3 kinds of lies.
I would say it's criticising people who use statistics.
Mark Twain.Don't think it was Keynes who said this and the correct version is there are 3 kinds of lies.
I would say it's criticising people who use statistics.
Popularised by but likely predates him - apparently.Mark Twain.
Yes. MW popularised it, but not his own work.Popularised by but likely predates him - apparently.
No, I'm spot on. That's exactly what I would say it means. Not exactly but you're closer.
Agree with what you're saying here, but the intent of the quote is probably always going to be capable of individual interpretation. Not really possible to ask the author as we aren't certain who he was and is undoubtedly dead. Annoying. No, I'm spot on. That's exactly what I would say it means.
Why don't you enlighten us into exactly what the as yet unidentified originator of this quote actually meant by it and we can see how 'close' I am.
I always took it as to criticize people who use statistics dishonestly or manipulate them to lie. Not every person using statistics as you've stated. When used honestly they're powerful tools but can be equally powerful and easy to use dishonestly. No, I'm spot on. That's exactly what I would say it means.
