Hi mate, from what I'm reading online I can just download Windows 10 onto a USB and then boot it up off the USB from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Hardware

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X
Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti
HDD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB)
Power: Corsair RM750
Case: NZXT H500i

Already got a mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor etc.

I'm just looking into 2x additional 120mm fans or 1x 280mm liquid cooler for the front as the case only comes with one rear and one top fan. My CPU comes equipped with one also.
Ryzen loves fast ram. So make sure it is at a minimum 3200mhz.

And like I just said, you can save a big wedge going with a 2600.

I built my son a 2600 based system for last Christmas, then back in August-ish built myself a new 3600 system with the MSI B450 gaming plus, GTX 1060 (carried over from the previous i5-6600k)

I do recommend against the 3600X though. All you get for the extra money is a mild factory overclock. Which you can do in 5 minutes by yourself with the Ryzen matter software.

Yeh my RAM is 3.2GHz just checked.

I'm not tooo fussed on the 3600X price and ordered now so too lazy to return haha.

Yeh I just don't know if to go with RGB lights, whilst more expensive and louder, just because of my glass sidepanel. Lots of polarizing reviews.

In your opinion from building your sons (gaming presume) do you think 1TB SSD is enough? Or should I pull over my existing 1TB HDD from my current PC.

Ok, despite what you've been told so far, MSI boards have been one of the better ones for Ryzen so don't sweat it. I have the vanilla Tomahawk myself. You won't have to flash the BIOS like I did as you've got 3600 support from the start (I had to flash mine as it was released before Ryzen 5).

Yes, you can DL it to a boot/install USB. I thought you were going to try and migrate, which can be a massive PITA depending on a whole lot of factors. Just make sure you burn/back up anything you can't stand to lose. You can always just throw in your old OS drive and pull stuff off it too as long as you can connect it...just don't do that until you're up and running or windows will detect another OS present during install and throw you a whole other set of options and just add to your confusions (since you apparently haven't done this before) blah blah blah.

Now, this is probably a hangover from me doing this for too long but I suggest just installing the OS drive at first and then adding others later after you're up and running with all the latest updates. Couple of reasons for this but I just suggest it. I also first boot in to the BIOS and disable the audio chipset until the OS is up, running and has all the latest updates. Then you can go back in and enable it and do the install.

What speed is the RAM? I ask because Matisse (Ryzen 5) supports a native max of 3200MHz, anything over that is technically OC'ing. Also keep in mind our chipset is only dual channel (4 slots but only dual channel support) so, if you add more RAM later, you won't see as much of a benefit (need quad channel for that). What I'm getting at is it's essentially best to go max on speed (ie. 3200), if you can, and max capacity out to whatever you can afford, which is why I went up to 32GB. Here's the mem support page for yours, check your RAM's model # to see if it's in the list. Don't worry too much if it's not but it's just something to look at. Also use it to DL all the latest drivers.

Power supply should be fine.

Cheers buddy, all great info. Basically I got this PC repaired about 12 months ago after it basically decided life wasn't worth it anymore. I have a crap ton of songs and music plus a few games installed and that's it for now. So once I back all media onto my new USB (My Passport 4TB) then I'm not fussed about losing anything else. To be honest, the whole hardware install is daunting but doing the OS properly has me most worried just from past experiences. I'm hoping to just plug in my passport and download Win10 to it or do I need a seperate small little USB stick just for Windows?

My RAM is 3.2MHz I made sure I didn't go over that because of the CPU. I only opted for dual to 16GB as I read somewhere dual is better than single and no game is even out yet that will require above 16GB? If that's right - I certainly won't be doing any film editing etc.

Yeah, the drive needs to be bootable so it's just simpler to slap it on a blank (it's going to get formatted anyhow) USB stick to avoid pulling your hair out. I'm sure it can be done one way or another but it'd likely be more hassle than it's worth.

Yeah, I did 32GB because I do dick around with video encoding/editing and just don't want to have to think about it later. And yes, two sticks is better than one...ie. dual channel. But if you add two more later on, you won't get quad channel throughput, just dual. Main thing is using two sticks...8X8/16X16 etc.

I have not recommended any B450 mobos. All I said is Asus and Gigabyte are the better brands as traditionally they usually come out tops in mobo reviews. However, I tend to read between the lines to find what's best for me rather than follow flavour of the month. For example, I listen to music on my PC so I look for a mobo with high snr figures.
