Computer games.

How can you say people are falling for anything if you've never actually tested the game?

This game is exactly the same as the old marmite debate: love it or hate it.

Personally I've never tasted marmite so I neither love nor hate it. I've seen marmite, I've been around people eating it, I've even given it a sniff but as I've never tasted I can't say it's tasty or disgusting.

I appreciate anyone that likes/dislikes a game but I just can't take anyone seriously that can't be arsed to play it.

I'd agree most of the time, but this isn't a normal type of game. It's not like a, say, FIFA, where you have to play it to know the 'weight' of the physics, how quick it is, how it 'feels'. It's not even like a Monkey Island, where the puzzles and pacing are important, how the player feels rewarded as they progress. Death Stranding is a narrative experience - the gameplay is secondary. It's a means to an end.

I don't know how much of it you've seen personally, but if you can please tell me how playing it would change the core experience for me? What does it add?

Gaming is an interactive media - it's the interaction that draws you in to 99% of titles. This isn't one of those games - it's like Night Trap, Her Story, Gone Home and so on; it's an interactive movie but with longer than usual padded out dull gameplay sections.

Indeed, you could argue that cutting all gameplay and having Death Stranding as a movie is the best way to enjoy it. Even in positive reviews, I've not really read or seen anything where people say "the gameplay is what makes this outstanding". Mostly because that'd be an outright lie.

Bit the bullet and purchased Death Stranding. Gotta say the stepping mechanics are INCREDIBLE. I don't want to leak any spoilers, but I will say there's a section in the game were the walking blew my mind. The grass density and the detail on some of the rocks deserves special praise.

I hope it is, I'm a massive MGS fan but Kojima went off the rails since MGS3.

Really hoping a fresh new project would bring out his best again. But obviously throwing too much money at a creative like him is also a danger.
I agree massively with this. Replayed 1, 2 and 3 to death. 4 was an absolute abomination of a ‘game’ where you literally hated going through a door for fear of triggering a cut scene. Peace walker was a return to form, aside from Kojimas annoying self insert. 5 was alright (if you include Ground zeros) the gameplay is good, but suffers massively from a boring story and god awful everything else. Totally seemed that Kojima start huffing his own excrement and got carried away with himself. I’d even argue 5 is better because they took it away from him in the end.

If it turns up on a free bundle at some point I’ll play it, but cannot be bothered to fork out for another Kojima game anytime soon.

I’ve seen nothing of the game outside of initial clips on Twitter before it came out that’s why I haven’t said it’s a good/bad game.

I watch lots of gaming streams myself but of games I play/played where I can appreciate what’s going on. Despite the type of game Death Stranding is you surely can’t tell me playing instead of watching doesn’t add anything? It’s like telling me driving a super car doesn’t add anything more than watching someone drive said supercar?

Death Stranding looks a unique game and I’m sure it’s got some clever mechanics not seen on many games. You’re also not the decision maker watching someone else play which to me is one of the most important parts.

Bit out of the loop with games, but recently picked up COD: Modern Warfare & Jedi: Fallen Order. I usually enjoy COD campaigns but this one just felt very average, and I was a bit surprised by how short it was (or seemed). Never got to feel invested in it at all, unlike the last campaign (WW2). A few good ideas in there, such as the changing of playable characters etc., but all a bit COD-by-numbers. Now I've finished that, I hope to make a start on Fallen Order tonight...

Find it a bit mad that people are getting warm under the collar about other people liking certain games

The 'walking simulator' genre has been widely derided in recent times - but I can honestly say that some of favourite gaming experiences over the past decades have been within this genre - Dear Esther, Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, Her Story etc - All beautiful, thoughtful short experiences that satisfy me in a way that a million triple A lootbox filled slogs could never

That's not to say that I only play these games - My all time favourites include FF7, Red Dead Redemption, numerous versions of Pro Evo, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Resident Evil 4. To suggest that these smaller, slower games are any less valid within the medium of gaming is ludicrous.

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it bad.
