Most seasons a lot of the u23’s feature in pre-season and then end up on loan.
The experience of being around the first team will be invaluable, If he ends up on loan it will be important to choose the team wisely.
I think they are keeping him here to protect him, he is not ready to out on loan, not good enough to play in the championship(yet) and not strong enough mentally to play in the leagues below the championship, in my opinion he will progress better by staying at Finch Farm and learning there by training with the first team squad and playing for the U23’s, and maybe getting on the bench, now and again with the first team, especially in the league cup, when he can go on when the game has been won.

Just not feeling this lad, with Rooney there was a massive buzz around him, Barkley as well, this lad, nada, I suppose its cos hes only been here a short time, but I dunno, not feeling this 1 in my bones.

With DCL on an extended break after the U21’s and Tosun not ready to start pre-season, we’ll have a chronic lack of striking options for the start of pre-season. No harm at all in involving him and giving him some minutes in the early games to see what he’s made of.

Marcel, Rooney was a player who comes along once in a blue moon, Barkley was a very good prospect but his apparent potential failed to materialise at Everton ( in my opinion ) so to put young Simms in their bracket is asking too much, let’s just see how the young lad progresses.

Rooney of course was playing for and scoring for England at this age, so yes he’s no Rooney. Arguably , based upon U23s playing time last season and selection for England u18s he’s not even our best 18 year old attacker, that’s Anthony Gordon. But then Gordon hasn’t got his own thread on GOT so I may be wrong.

What is without dispute is that , after an ordinary 1st year at u18s , his progress last season was startling . Youngsters don’t score as many goals as that at u18 because they are promoted rapidly when they show talent e.g. Marcus Rashford, so we’ve still to see if his blistering pace and ability to score with each foot can be maintained at U23s level against bigger, stronger opponents.

Rooney was a natural who’d made it by 18, Simms is very much a work in progress who requires a lot of work on certain areas of his game like hold up play, playing with your back to goal . In a way our coaches can add much more to his game than they could to Rooney’s so it’s both exciting and intriguing what the next few seasons hold for Simms.
