I happen to think he was.

We tried for Silva, we tried giving Unsy a go, we were in trouble, yes we ended up 8th, miles away from danger, but ive said it before and I will say it again, we were in big, big trouble, we needed something. Sam was it.
We were never in that much trouble that we needed Sam. In fact we weren't in trouble at all.

Brands saying he was all for the Silva appointment too.

I initially thought that might just be PR, but they do appear to be pulling in the same direction with a clear plan.

All I know is that the club got it wrong, hired Sam as a stop gap (no idea why he was allowed 40m+ to spend), and now appears to be getting things right.

The relegation fears were so bad that we had to buy that window. Tbh the signings at the time made complete sense, Tosun and Walcott were experienced forwards and to be fair they made enough of an impact that season to get us over the line and made it look comfortable. If they hadn’t have joined we were looking at DCL and Niasse being our strikers to get us out of a relegation battle.

50 mill could have been better spent but far better wasting that than going down.

A Digne injury leaves Everton knackered for a season. Loans these days mean you cant recall.

Let's see how Mr Brands decision looks after any lengthy time out for Digne. Not too good I'd suggest.

But you can say that about many of our players Pickford, siggy, richy all could break a leg and be out for a season. Surely the fact that we need a ST and CB that go straight into the first team is more important and a better use of our funds than signing a back up LB when we already have one of the best back ups in the league here already.

Baines has nothing to offer defensively. So I wouldn't choose him regardless. He's positionally poor as a defender and has almost no pace now.

At least if we threw a younger player in there's scope for development. Isn't that what we're supposed to be about now: development? Hence the 'younger than 25 year olds' statement from Brands?

Attacking wise baines still has a lot to offer , so your basically basing your opinion on the assumption that Digne is going to be unavailable for a period of time when we play all the big teams in which we will be defending primarily?

We wasted millions & learned a very expensive lesson. It does look like we have actually learned though & in 5-10 years time we might be saying that it was the best lesson we ever unwittingly paid out for.

This thread has come alive. I can only be down to getting Gomes in. So exciting to think of what he has in store for us. A bit like Christmas.

The triangle to success is starting to knit together well;

Moshiri/Usmanov - Financial backers

Brands - The master of transfers & Recruitment

Silva - The Coach/Team Builder

We were 9th when they signed.
