I hate to say it, but if Gana goes, we might be better off with the Allardyce tactics we saw on Tuesday. Play on the counter and we can probably steal a few results. Andre and Tom are not great tacklers by any means and we completely lost control in the midfield. I don't expect that to be any different if Gana goes, so we might as well make the best of the situation until we can fill that/those spot in the midfield.

It's a good thing, because Silva has always been a counter attacking manager.

His build up isn't about speed or pace, but he DOES like to build from the back in the wide spaces of the pitch.

Not sure if Silva is a pure counter enthusiast as you suggest. I think it’s more occasional choice to be honest.

A counter attacking team put high emphasis on good pressing ball recovery, we seems to let go of this approach gradually.

The best attributes in the team now is pace, the worst is dribbling and creativity. With slow build up requiring the later to flourish.

We used to rely on fast break and pace to exploit space but we are now passing around to draw opponent out of shape to find spaces.

So I’m not sure what Silva is evolving into.

That's why I advocate for Silva's 4-3-3 where he plays with twin CMs/DMs. We just don't have the personnel. Maybe McCarthy can get back to form and pair with Gana. I honestly think it will HELP our attack as we can support the wide places BETTER.

But we lost the midfield because Gana wasn't there, let's be honest. Davies is not swift, but Gomes is SLOW. Like Garreth Barry slow without the positional acumen. Didn't Sigurdsson have like 7 tackles? I know he works hard, but that's not okay.

To me, there ARE no tactics that a Davies/Gomes central midfield pairing can be effective in. They aren't disciplined to begin with, why would anyone think they can employ a sound tactic. And I don't want anything resembling a Sam Allardyce tactical game plan.

Say what you want about Silva, but he inherited a team that was the WORST at conceding goals in open play in the league. On top of that, we were like 2nd worst in shots and chances created. Do some realize that we are like 4th in the league at shots conceded? top 10 in goals conceded in open play? We are also top 10 in chances created, shots, possession, etc. So let's PLEASE not suggest any sort of change in tactics back to last year is warranted or needed.

He's certainly had to adopt different tactics due to not having the personnel to execute his preferred systems. No question. But even when his team was dominating the Greek league, they were making jokes in the press about how they'd just kick the ball back to the other team in order to set up the counter.

I just feel that if we get him a few more options in central midfield, his could at least do better in employing tactical solutions in game. Yes we need a better CF and maybe a right sided attacker, but it's really those CM / DM positions that matter more tactically if you asked me. Limitations in RB and CB don't help. But honestly, he was appointed manager of a side that didn't have a good mix of players to suit his tactics.

Actually was a big fan of his before he went to Saints. Why he thought that was the next logical step for him confuses me.

Same. Thought he'd at least move to a European place chasing team in another country after succeeding at Leipzig. Going from one of the better teams in Germany to one of the worst in the Premier League was an interesting decision. I'd like to hope Everton at least looked at him in the summer when he became available and decided on Silva, instead of just insisting on Silva without looking into many alternatives because he was the "owners guy".

You can make the argument that Silva tried to get the team playing his way (and we were prior to Anfield), but now that the players have lost confidence (and we may lose Gana), he may need to switch his tactics. I'm not saying it's excusable the way we have been playing (I've been on record many times that Silva is not a leader of men), but there is no denying that the players haven't been the same since that game. We need to find a solution and fast because Europe is not out of reach.

We have fast players upfront, players that is capable of playing passes to forward running players. We don’t enjoy playing in tight spaces trying to break down a double flat line of four. So I think we are more suitable for counter attack with speed and having players running into space to maximise siggy capability.

Yeh, and you can't counter-attack sides that come to frustrate easily.

So, you have to draw them out, then hit on the counter.

Or you possess the ball, get it wide to get behind their defensive line and at least push them back so they can't just sit in a medium or low block all game, and bring it back to the middle to create chances. We don't have a CF that's good in the air and been bad at doing that from the ground at least on the right and giving the ball up - allowing teams to hit US on the counter. Wolves will sit back and counter all day, too, but they can pass and make good decisions on the ball. THAT BEING SAID, I advocate playing Bernard right. He takes decent care of the ball. Walcott has been a huge problem this year and I believe Lookman is still a left sided player and better for now off the bench. We give Cenk another shot and hope we can break them down.

HOWEVER, we cannot be giving away stupid fouls and Keane cannot be gifting the ball to the other team to help spring the counter. We have to be patient and wear them down. Clean sheet is a must. But we outplayed them at their place, even after getting screwed due to the red card / spot of the kick.

He’s definitely not using the same tactics he did in Greece, at least not now. I’m fine with him adapting but we have to adapt to be more effective, switching from counter to gradual buildup is exposing our inability and vulnerability at both end. We may not execute the best counter but we are certainly worst with gradual.

We haven't been THAT bad, though. That was a REALLY bad team last year. We were extremely lucky to finish 8th.

Our team also just was a terrible fit for what Silva likes to do. You've also got a RB that likes to cut inside and had a RW that could not take care of the ball. Silva should be criticized for not making personnel changes quicker in that regard, but he's still not got a CF, and his CBs aren't great for how he wants to play IMO. But the worse transgression is in central midfield.

He could have done better for sure, increase tempo, transition faster, improve ball retrieval and educate the player when and where to press as a team. These aspect of the game require less technical ability and easier to achieve, once we can improve on these, decision making on the ball is less complicated after every turnover as we have much more space to exploit with pace.

Put your tampon back in and take the rest of the season off you lemon

Lets be honest the atmosphere saturday will be dead unless we are losing and it'll be the usual chorus of boo's.

The vast majority (myself included) who turn up saturday will be doing so out of apathy and to get away from the missus and shopping for the afternoon.

Sorry if thats offended the super fans behind their keyboards.

Maybe the useless tosspots infesting this club will finally give one of the best and loyal fanbases in this country something to finally cheer about next season - I'll not hold my breath.

As said the highlight of our season will be trying to prevent that lot from an open top bus parade around the liver buildings. Have a think about that.
