Stadium Stuff!

Couldn't help notice the canal / river running thru our 'empty' fields.

Given the red tape involved in just putting up a fence these days, I'd say we've had it.

Its Ditton brook. I imagine it would be possible to build over it, but another challenge to be overcome. Whether you could get planning permission, god knows. The emotive issue of leaving Liverpool would again prove divisive.

Its a moot point anyway. It'd cost 500 million for the rail link and who is gonna pay that? The associated councils? Why?

Both Liverpool and Merseyside's populations are decreasing. We are in a recession.

And we could only, currently, afford to build a new stadium there if it was part of a big retail complex or something similar. I can imagine Liverpool council paying 300 million for a rapid transit system so its own citizens can ignore Liverpool 1 and go and shop in Knowsley or whatever council Ditton comes under.

Chances of this occuring 1/5,000,000 probly.

If he returns, I'd like to test his theory if he answers it:

His example in Melbourne, the train passes the MCG, capable of holding nearly 100,000 people I think. They would fill that for an Ashes Test Match before the station was there, now the highest attendances would be in the 60,000's for day one only. If the train was supposed to increase attendance, why has the reverse happened? Cricket is as big to an Australian as Everton is to the Scouser.

Geez, I've not been on this thread for a while, but for a minute there, I thought you were all having a crack at me!!! Anyways...

Melbourne in Australia

It's a similar story in Melbourne Australia - the city's sports stadia (MCG, AAMI Stadium, Rod Laver Arena, HiSense Arena, Olympic Park, Etihad Stadium) are all well serviced with the "City Loop" rail line, which as it's name suggests, circles the city stopping at all key points.

International rugby league games, say Australia v New Zealand at AAMI Park, 30,000 supporters attend. At the same time, an Aussie Rules game is played at the MCG, a stone's throw from AAMI Park, another 30,000-plus crowd. Arrival and dispersal to and from the ground is a breeze, with a minimum of fuss, trains leaving every couple of minutes to all points of the compass.
For the record, there were over 100,000 for the first Grand Final, but only 94,000 for the replay. The A-League rescheduled the first local derby (Melb Heart vs Melb Victory) because of the replay so, whilst I like how you're throwing Melbourne up as an example, it's not perfect.

Also, whilst our public transport in the "sporting precinct" is good, it's not on the City Loop.

The MCG is only really serviced by 2 stations, neither are a part of the loop. There are Trams running past though & they do an adequate job by scheduling extra services to meet demand.

Now, attendances...for the AFL season, they average 55,335 over 54 matches (replay not included) total for season 2,988,131. For the cricket...68,777 for the last Boxing day...bigger for the Ashes though...

Cheers Biggy, far more informed than me, I agree it is a silly comparison. The main point he can't get is that there are only so many supporters willing to go in the first place, even if NASA flew them there. Aussie Rules is huge in Melbourne, they have the ability to seat 100,000, but for a regular game they wouldn't fill it would they? Similarly, if we could ship 60,000 fans in half an hour to a new stadium, doesn't mean 60,000 are gonna go there because this amount simply isn't there.

Very true Elong. Outside of Finals, there's only one regular home & away game that annually attracts over 90,000 at the G. We have a wealth of Stadiums, all shared, and they are the G at 100,000, Docklands at 55,000, and the new (and only) rectangular stadium seating about 33,000. We are well supported for stadiums, but for 2-5 100,000+ games per year, it is overkill tbh.

Dunno. Anyone know why loads of Aussies are posting pictures of their underground system on here?

For one, we'll never get it to link up with MerseyTravel.

LOOK. OUT OF LIVERPOOL MAYBE.

But I'll not stand to see my club moved out of this Hemisphere.

When it comes to Hemisphere's I'm North all the way.

The lines are there already, just need to get them mothballed so we can welcome the extra 20,000 fans
