Computer games.

people are clocking on that modern games are largely soul-destroying.

they used to be a labour of love...often made by a very small team or even one man in the case of one of my favourite all-time games:

Yess! Amazing game, games are so similar now that's my main issue, you seem to have 3 or 4 main game 'types' as such with different skins, I appreciate there are probably less mainstream games doing interesting stuff but I don't have time to look for stuff like that really

The different skins analogy is on the money: they use the same templates from the same software using the same engine and churn out hundreds of samey titles.

From the less mainstream stuff, take a look at Inside. It recalls classic gaming:

or Penumbra: Black Plague is also a bit old-school in feel:

Inside is a wonderful game - With a genuinely engaging, original and intriguing storyline

They're still out there though, same as before.

Independents, I would argue, have an even greater platform in things like PlayStation store to get their work out to the masses. They don't need packaging physical distribution as per years gone by. Is that right? It looks that way but i could be wrong.

Commercially games games are miles better than they've ever been, but I understand what you mean. I watched a good video about EA killing Career Mode on FIFA in favour of Ultimate Team which does make me angry coz career mode should be the flagship mode.

I think you've got a point with independents having a lot of opportunity in this age of online distribution.

Maybe I'm just jaded as I'm really struggling to find a game to get into. Normally I'll play one or two games a year but slacking a bit. The candidates on my to-do list are System Shock 1/2, Deus Ex original, Metro 2033, X3 Albion Prelude, Condemned, Alien Isolation, Deadly Premonition, FEAR 1/2/3. Any feedback on them? I've got a good feeling they'll be up my street. Tried a bunch of AAA-games like Bioshock, Witcher and many more but just wasn't feeling them. Frictional Games are my kind of thing, also Valve's Portal/Half-Life series and the Mass Effect trilogy (the less said about Andromeda the better).

Sort of Sci-Fi spacey horror technical games? Are they first person shooters? Last one even vaguely like that was 'Prey' which i didn't mind but had no real longevity to keep playing after you finish it.

Yo! I just decided to replay system shock 2 last weekend! Still a lot of atmosphere in that game.

F.E.A.R. while it has aged now, is still a corker..... And still the only game to have made me actually jump while playing.

X3 is like Elite, but even more!!

They're a mix of styles but you're right about the genre, a lot of sci-fi spacey horror

I played X2 over a decade ago, and 25 years ago Frontier Elite! I think the new Elite might just be too long & dedicated for me, so a mission single-player thing like X3's Albion might be just the ticket. We've got similar sci-fi taste (BSG!) so I reckon those three you quoted are gonna be the ones I'm gonna go for.

Elite dangerous is my most played game....I have 1100 hours in it. Rookie hours I know, but a lot for me these days.

1100 hours is rookie? frak's sake...no chance for me then. it took me months to complete the Mass Effect trilogy and that was probably 100 hours or so.
You can get to a respectable state fairly quick..... Lots of my time was in the game early when making money was much slower than it is now
