Computer games.

Not a big fan of the FIFA games as they don't feel very accurate to me but my young cousin was round the other night so I stuck FIFA18 on to keep him entertained and he was playing through a World Cup in FUT mode.

He won a pack and when it opened it was full of top players - Ronaldo, Messi, Hazard, Marcelo, Aguero and so on and so forth - all 97-99 rated players. Is this just EA killing off FUT on FIFA18 in time for the release of 19 as I went online for a quick game to check other sides and my opponent also had an unusual number of megastars

Yes. Standard gambling tactic - make chance of winning on the less profitable thing better so you entice them over to the more profitable.

The last generation FIFA is a perfect loss-leader in that respect - or it would be except EA still make money off it regardless.

Whole thing is disgusting and should be illegal.

What with the new Playstation classic announcement today, retro-gaming is a HUGE market it seems.

I've been tempted to invest in one of these which boast of featuring thousands of titles...

Has anyone got one? Are they any good/reliable/playable? Bottom line is: are these things any GOOD?

I'm not tech-minded so I don't know about specs/speeds/emulator/ROMS and all that caper.

The link above is just one of loads of sites offering them....

Slightly digressing. Back in the 1970's (before mobile phones and PC's) I was computer manager for an IBM main-frame installation. It was operational 24 hours a day, six days a week. One day, one of my computer programmers came to see me and asked if he could download some computer games. (Computer games, at the time, were things like tennis, where you knocked a little rectangle backwards a forwards with a 'bleep' each time it was hit and a small explosion if you scored a point). The programmer said he had spoken to the other programmer's and they had all agreed it would only be used during tea breaks and lunch-time. Guess what my response was? Clue: you will need lots of asterisks in your answer.

The games were simply better. Take for example the PS1-generation of Tomb Raiders & Final Fantasies...there was more focus on gameplay, of immersion via gameplay as well as story, presentation, graphics etc. In PS1 Tomb Raider games I had the feeling I could get anywhere: identify some far-off cliff then get there via skillful running, jumping & climbing. In the newer ones I feel really restricted...that whole exploration feeling has gone from the gameplay.

Sad how innovation is being replaced by monetisation

the lack of interest in games is reflected in your comment...9 days later your comment is still on the same page.

people are clocking on that modern games are largely soul-destroying.

Its a business and a commercial product you beard smelling hipsters.

they used to be a labour of love...often made by a very small team or even one man in the case of one of my favourite all-time games:
