I've been saying this for a while, he's [Poor language removed].

Heitinga and Jagielka, without excuse.

Heitinga was crap today as well.

One bad game, does not a bad player make, and so far this season -- pre-season included -- that was Distin's only bad game. You can't live off past mistakes, you live in the present, and fair dos today he was badly gash. But let's see what he's like next week, before we write him off. Because I know, if it had been Jagielka, people would be brushing it off and giving him another chance.

As a sidenote though, Jags was ace today. He seems really buoyed by the whole England thing.

TBH I think it's more to do with being comfortable with his knee again...at least more than he's been since he's been back.

He's got his pace back, for sure. But even his distribution today seemed calmer, and just better. I genuinely think it's given him some more confidence. Not that he needed any, but it's another confirmation for us and him, that he's a leader and a class act.

Let me say this.

When a defensive player has a poor match, it's usually accompanied by the opposition taking advantage with goals and therefore highlighted a bit more.

Yeah, Distin had a bad match but had we held it to 1-1, we may not be saying as much. I still wanted to see Jags/Heitinga in back which is inarguably our best CB pairing but I wouldn't dismiss Distin at all. He's have quite a few matches for us where he's been a rock in the back.

I can understand where you are coming from Tex but it is about consistency. I agree with you on our CB pairing, Hetty is better back there than in midfield ( at least until Duffy gets a bit older) Regardless of Distin's past games, like today a lively forward will reveal his short comings and we get punished. No qualms for me a very poor buy, 5 mill for a 31 year old.

No qualms about what you posted above.

I want Jags & Heitinga together for a few matches. But Distin could easily be pressed into service if one of those two goes down. Need him to stay sharp.

Yeah, I also agree that the 5M was a bit much but not much we can do about it now.

This allthough JH was piss poor today.

I was coming here to start a Distin out thread but should have known there would already be four pages on it. Heits and Jags at CB!

Really lid? I just see him at fault for most of our goals, on top of being largely dodgy last season too.

Heitinga was our best centre half last season, and Jagielka is our best centre half at the club. It just makes sense to put them together, Distin deserves to be dropped for that performance alone.

Distin was very good at the end of last season. Playing around a different CB partner each week is confusing, no? Yobo, Neill, Neville, Hibbert and Heitinga all played there last season.

Now he's had time to get used to Jags, and vice-versa, he had been playing really well. Dropping him after one bad game is a knee-jerk, and overly harsh, reaction.

And Heitinga was ace last season, but he's never played next to Jags, and he's been weak this season -- albeit in midfield. It's not always as simple as "these are our 2 best, put them next to each other". It's about the team, how they partner and so on. Birmingham were a good example last season. A back four of championship players, but they worked so well together it was incredibly effective.

Anyway, I've rattled on a bit, but I trust Moyes to play what he feels is the best CB partnership. Defensively, Moyes makes good calls. He's failing at the other end; being too cautious, and that's my problem with him, but defensively speaking he picks his best options.

Yes but come on mate, Heitinga was ace last season in defence, Jagielka is our best centre half.

Jagielka has pace, tough tackling and great reading of the game, Heitinga reads the ball well, defends well and is super at distributing the ball out of defence.

That's some ingredients there mate, its like Jagielka is toast and Heitinga is cheese. They belong together.
