Speeding

Limits where put in place decades ago were they not, cars are much more capable and safe in modern times, limits should be increased

Speaking as someone who is waiting for a notice of intended prosecution after being snapped doing about 36 in a 30 limit, there's only one person to blame and that's me, the driver.
Anyone doing 35 and over should take their medicine and pipe down. Obviously the respective other speed limits apply also.
I've recently got 3 points on an otherwise clean licence. I don't bitch about it because I wasn't just above the speed limit. However, regardless of what anyone might comment regarding this post, I am a safe driver. I always look well ahead, and not just my lane, rather than just the car in front. I never tailgate and always encourage cars to pull out in front of me early, rather than risk a blind spot in their mirror. I also change lanes if I see a car, obviously going a lot faster than me,in the outside lane.

Many cars can’t even give accurate speed indications. This fella is just trying to make a name for himself. If it’s introduced it will make no difference to the prats who do 60 in a 40 zone, but it will almost certainly end up catching good and decent drivers as well as causing more accidents due to looking at the speedo and not the road.........

I commend you for not bitching about it, that was the reason for my post too many caught speeding blame everyone but themselves. You've heard them, "speed camera van chevrons on rear doors were not correct design so I should be let off"

I always hold my hand up if I'm in the wrong. A meter maid once told me she wished everyone reacted the same way when I said " I've got away with it enough times so I'm not going to complain when I don't!"

..speed kills and anything that makes boy racers who think they are good drivers slow down is good as far as i’m concerned.

By definition, boy racers aren't the issue here. Boy racers don't generally do 32 in a 30 zone, or 43 in a 40 zone. Boy racers tend to put their foot down and end up doing 40+ in 30 zones, or 60+ in a 40 zone. You won't, except by accident, catch any more boy racers if this inspector's ideas are put into practice.

Speeding is a bogeyman used to hide the fact that many drivers on UK roads lack basic skills, and are a danger to themselves and others. It is far more cost effective to detect speeding and fine people for it than it is to actually put patrol cars out to catch the middle-land hoggers, the outside-lane-only club, those who overtake by doing one mile an hour more than the car on their left, those who never, ever, move back over to the left and people who crawl along slip roads expecting everyone already on the motorway to slow down and let them in.

We need a far stronger enforcement of general driving standards, the minimum standard acceptable to be given a licence needs to be raised, the test should include motorways, bad weather and night-time driving and people should either have to periodically re-test or there should be a threshold over which you can only cross if you have done the advanced driving test: IE you can't drive anything with an engine bigger than a 1.5 if you've only done the basic test.

To use an example that comes up almost daily in my driving, I am bored senseless of looking ahead of the car in front of me as we approach a roundabout, scanning the roundabout itself and the various other exits off of it to see where all the other cars are and planning my route and speed around it, only for the goon in front of me to have such profound tunnel vision that they brake to a complete halt regardless of the fact there is nothing coming.

If speeding alone was the sole issue, explain autobahns.

Here in Northern Ireland we have a radio presenter who used to bang on about the police prosecuting the poor motorist for every misdemeanour. One day he turned his whole show over to the public on the issue of speeding. People rang in one after the other complaining about speed traps , about police hiding in hedges with radar guns catching the unsuspecting motorist. The presenter revelled in this stuff. Then a policeman called and invited the presenter to accompany him the next time he had to call with someone's parents to let them know their child had been killed as a result of speeding. It put a different slant on the programme.

targeting the more egregious drivers (eg boy racers) is not a bad thing. Unfortunately Eggs, I suspect your joe-average citizen doing 55 in a 50 zone is going to cop most of this (that's how it works in NZ anyway)*

*every copper I come across or hear on the telly has recently emigrated from England. I reckon there's more pommie cops in NZ than kiwi ones.
