I have never been a trekkie, and I love it. Been playing since 2014 and still log 4-5 hours a week easy (it is my most played game now, probably over 1000 hours in it - a lot for me....rookie numbers for some people though...)
The great thing is, if you come into the game now, it has almost been all sorted in terms of bugs and finessing core gameplay. They are now ramping up the narrative in the game, which is great.
You can play in open with everyone, setup a private group for you and the mates, or go solo where there are no other human players - just you and the AI.
The sound design is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, and a full Newtonian flight model (with some limitations for fun reasons).
Don't be mistaken though, the game doesn't hold your hand. After the training missions you are left to your own devices. There are plenty of people who will give new players a hand though, I would check out the sub-reddits for Elite on PS4 and the Elite Wings sub for people looking to form a wing and go shoot stuff.
One of the big complaints is it is hard to find stuff in-game, and having to resort to using some (excellent) 3rd party apps to get the most out of the game. Frontier recognize this and in the next round of updates are introducing stuff into the game to make it less reliant on out of game sources.
