It's no fun to watch but I'll still settle for where we are and cut Sam a lot of slack. We can certainly set out to do better offensively and pose a threat but on that front I don't think things will significantly improve either without more investment.
For me it's more of a question of how long we play like this whilst inching towards safety with every point gained. Let's be honest, we are not going down, and that is great to say with clear conviction and kudos to Sam for it.
Give him the January window, and by the end of next month lets see where we are then. After that, I would expect him to have the freedom to experiment a little more and be a bit more expansive also. He has been forthright about the need for clean sheets but equally so about the quality of football or lack of it.
He has started better than anyone could have hoped for a month ago and is facing a rush of games and dealing with injuries as well as inheriting a car crash in terms of morale and organisation. Let's not forget that. If he is genuine about wanting the team to grow under him then he'll take on board what we can all see. Nobody would object to passing, flowing football and plenty of goals but he has been here a month and delivered on what was known he would prioritise and done that big style. We are very hard to beat, organised, and have players playing together in a coherent albeit ultra-conservative and yes, very dull and boring manner.
I expect far better from Everton on any given day but let's not lose sight of where we were coming from a few short weeks ago. Let's cement our recovery with a few more wins and points and from then on I fully expect Sam to implement a style of play that is far more ambitious and pleasing on the eye whilst maintaining results.
If he cannot or will not do that when we pass 40 points, then he won't have my support. But for now, he has justified it in spades.
