Are we in a relegation battle right now?

Are we relegationally challenged?

  • No, too early in season, over 38 games there will be at least 3 crapper teams

I reckon we need about 32 more points from the next 28 games. To give us a total of 40 points. We can win 10 games and draw 2 and lose 16 of the remaining fixtures.

In all likelyhood it will be more like, win 7, draw 11, lose 10.

Either way, it can be done

When you put it like that it sounds doable. I'd take a draw against Watford and then hope a new manager can sort the team out.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say no, right now we aren't.

We've been absolutely awful, and I doubt very much that anyone has been more critical of the side than me, but I still think it's too early to be even considering relegation as a real threat. If we're still in this position at the half way point then I'll be worried but at the moment i'm just annoyed.

I think we've got enough quality in the squad to get out of this mess, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we'll win the next 2 and find ourselves comfortably midtable and wondering what the fuss was about. Last December I was honestly thinking there was a chance we could get sucked into a relegation struggle, having not won in 9 or 10 games and having games against Arsenal, Liverpool and Leicester in the space of a week or so. We won 2 of them, went on a run and ended up thinking the top 4 was a possibility at one point. I'm not saying we're good enough to do the same as that, but I think we're well capable of stopping the rot and picking up enough points to be comfortable.

At the moment ,no. Experience tells us that many relegated teams start the season well before they implode. The true relegation battles begin around the Christmas period and we are now in the battle to get some form and climb the table before then.
Semantics I know , but it gives me hope to take this view.

No because it's far too early and we have Coleman and Bolasie coming back at some point before the end of the year, and the January window. If we are still in this position in February then yeah it's time for the bleach.

At this moment in time I think we will be relegated! The young players are okay but totally the wrong time to be playing them. The others, well don't start me? (quality, you have to be joking). A new manager has got a hell of a task to get us out of this mess.

The optimist in me desperately wants this scenario..I remember it was early Nov 1994 when we achieved our first win v West Ham..we only had 4 points at that stage and then Joe took over as manager...it was a bit touch and go at the end but we pulled through and of course won the cup..thats why the next manager appointment is so important...COYB !!

We are absolutely clueless going forward and have conceded the 2nd most goals in the league.
Including the cup games we have played about 20 times this season and I can't remember one good 90 minute performance.

So, yes.

N.b I didn't see the Sunderland Carabao Cup game.

Difference with Villa was they looked doomed for years before they went. But yes we are in serious trouble because the squad is a mess.

Right now we are playing like a side battling relegation. This team is losing matches with such a frequency, that it would do the hapless class of December 1993 under Jimmy Gabriel proud. So yes seeing that we have only won once in the league since opening day, and taking into account the league table standings, logic would indeed suggest that we are in a relegation scrap.

Two games in to a new season. You play City and Chelsea away and lose. You are bottom.

That's not a relegation battle. You ain't thought that through

You're in the relegation zone so you battle to get out it.
Maybe it's as easy as winning one game, maybe not.

Doesn't necessarily mean that any teams embroiled in a relegation battle at any point in the season are destined to go down (unless the last few weeks mean it's mathematically impossible).

also if its after the first game of the season?

see above

If we were only two or three games into the season I'd say no, but over a quarter of the season has gone... ...and we have just 8 points.
