Transfer Rumour Thomas Vermaelen

Holgate's alright on the right side of a three.

Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Vermaelen and Holgate is five varying levels of quality for two or three positions. I think the idea is to get established quality in who would be happy to be in reserve, because if we spent big on a centre-half now then you have gutted your defence in one summer and it's a big ask for us to cope with that transition and completely replacing our attack in the space of three months.

My only problem with this kind of signing is, he is known to be injury prone and often on the missing list.

We have been down that road before with the likes of Lacina Traore, they don't work out. So if he is being brought in as cover for players who are actually injured too, we will end up paying him a wage for doing naff all and our current defensive options will be stretched to the max.

The obvious issue with that being that we would have 4 defenders in their 30s and so would need to do exactly that in the next 12/18 months anyway.

With Keane settled in after a year here and Holgate with another year under his belt, and possibly the likes of Galloway/Browning coming back.

Then we can spend on a centre half in the summer of 2018 and have a much stronger balance of talent and experience.

It's known as a "punt" for that reason though. If it goes wrong, worth a try. If not, you have a player who would still be Barcelona if he was fit.

Plus, World Cup year, professional pride etc. - you never know. Worst case scenario is Jagielka gets a few more games than he would have done and we lost £2-3m - in a year where we are going to be a side in transition regardless due to the outgoings and incomings, that doesn't bother me.

"Everton make loan offer for Vermaelen..."

Hm...okay, I can see it.

"...with a view to buy."

AND THERE IT IS

Good god almighty.

?

Why's that an issue? A view to buy is standard for a loan now - Roma had the same thing. If he's crap/constantly injured, we just pass up the option.

Galloway will never be an Everton regular, said it since he came in to the side. Doubt browning will either unless we're happy with midtable.

I'm not arguing with the logic, and I actually said a couple of days ago he'd likely come in simply because he was the only link. Hardly what most hoped for though.

Sounds great to me. Big talent, has the ability to start, really. Look, for a relatively bargain, worth a punt. When he's fit, he's really friggin good. Worth the risk.

Bold bit is the key for me. No point bringing in someone "fit" when they're as useful as a chocolate teapot on the pitch.

Vermalelen would be our best defender. Would be perfect in a 3-5-2 (actual 3-5-2 with Coleman when he returns) and can play in a 4. Problem is he is always unfit

Galloway has more chance thsn browning imo and it's a slim one.
