Transfer Rumour Thomas Vermaelen

It'll be a loan to cover Funes Mori who has done his meniscus and won't be seen at all this season.

What did you want, us to blow £50m on a centre half? That was never going to happen - Koeman has been clear about it; it's cover. Vermaelen is a quality player when fit, and yes, he's had injury problems, but we either bring in an Anthony Gardner type, who is fit but useless, or we bring in a good player and take a gamble, with the hope being that if he stays fit he'll be an asset. If not one of our two other spare centre-halves gets game time - not ideal as Jags is finished IMO and Holgate isn't ready, but oh well.

This was never going to be a 'big signing' position, so I'm perfectly fine with it.
I don't disagree with you, but it's a sad state of affairs that he's only cover. We seem likely to play 3 at the back fairly regularly, and I don't fancy Williams and jags chances of playing 50+ games at a high level.

New dawns eh?

Christ, it's true. He's just arrived for his medical.

Mate it's a shocking decision if true, you don't bring in a player made if glass to provide cover at cb and the only cover at left back.

Question should be, why are we only looking at a free player for cover when it's plain we need a starter - purely down to us not selling players Wed counted on for the money we needed.

Lot of smoke and mirrors this summer, but the fact is becoming clear we have nowhere near the money some thought, which means our ambitions are way removed from bridging the gap to top four.

I don't think he's cover for left back. I think Martina would move there. I think he's cover for central defence so we have "balance" - because we have too many right footed centre-halves.

I simply think it's a punt because we can afford to do so. As for it being a cheap option, I hope it's to free up money for a quality striker. I guess we'll see.

I'm just not automatically against this. I see the logic in it. Roma clearly saw the logic to it too - it went wrong, but it's a worthwhile gamble for us. The important position to nail outright quality and spend big is the striker, not the centre half.

Agree, although we probably differ in how we view the relative importance of another CB we can rely on.

Holgate's alright on the right side of a three.

Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Vermaelen and Holgate is five varying levels of quality for two or three positions. I think the idea is to get established quality in who would be happy to be in reserve, because if we spent big on a centre-half now then you have gutted your defence in one summer and it's a big ask for us to cope with that transition and completely replacing our attack in the space of three months.

We won't be spending 50m on a striker mate, be shocked if it was more than 25m tbh, which begs the question, just how much where we willing to really spend on the team if we hadn't have sold Lukaku?

We have that in Holgate and Jagielka. That's the point :)

Fair play. I'd be happy with Vermaelen in rotation. What I would really like is for Williams to look more like the player he was for Swansea. Hasn't been convincing so far and I'd hoped it was first season syndrome. If he gets his shizzle together it will be like a new signing.

The obvious issue with that being that we would have 4 defenders in their 30s and so would need to do exactly that in the next 12/18 months anyway.
