Now and Then - Which was Better ??

It's always better when you're winning mate... :)

Back in the day we were the ones nicking players off of less affluent clubs (we were the Mersey Millionaires FFS!) so I find it hard to moan about Chelski and Shitte because we were once doing the same thing. I'm not implying that you're moaning BTW...just sayin'.

It's all cyclic anyhow...our day will come again. When that day is, is the big question.

Yeah I did think that when I was writing it but just think there was a lot more teams who could hold onto their players without being hounded for them via press stories. Yeah we had money but the emphasis wasn't on signing 6 or 7 players every summer like it is now. Maybe your right but I just think it was a bit more even in those days still opinions mate and that's what I asked for at the end of the thread..

Brought a tear to my eye. But truthfully back then was real footy when pay was secondary to playing the game. I'm excited were we are going in the next year or two but the sixties and even the seventies and most deffo the eighties were super times without all the drama. Except maybe Tony Kay but i digress.

Maybe this more than anything else was the difference ??

No, you're right there...there was definitely more emphasis on building a side before Sky went and ruined many aspects of modern football by "making it rain" at da' club.

I think that if this was 1991 we'd win the league with this side (The pre-Sky thing) I know this is a random comment but just stating that things were so different then ! However, looking at the long term future for football in this country they do need to look at salary caps or transfer caps (maybe percentage of earnings or something) as they need to get a balance between EVERY club and not just the SKY4.

That would be one hell of a fight mate, the PFA wouldn't stand for it and, being the oldest professional sporting unions in the world, it'd be hard to strong-arm them unless it was a worldwide decision and not just in England. But, with all the uproar over things like aid to Greece and whatnot, if the European economy tanks into the abyss there may be no other option.

Thanks Neph... I think that a salary cap could be the way to fix the disparity in the league. I've heard people say that 'the best players would leave for other leagues' my response would be ' go then and we'll get on with it' !! The bolded bit is what should happen in the premier league !

First off, nice post THT (as always).

With Spikeman in that can't much judge "then".

But I will add that there are 2 sides to the parity coin. Take the nba for example. Since it implemented a hard cap, several major market teams became basement dwellers overnight, and have yet to recover. New York is the big team which comes to mind. And while you might argue the parity is good, revenues , ratings, & overall popularity have inarguably suffered. And for a league competing w/ nfl, mlb, nhl, mls, etc...that has NOT been a good thing.

I know it's easy to nostalgically pretend as though the old puritan ways are best. But let's be honest. If the EPL was only an average league, would the lure of breaking into top 4 be just as tantalizing? Would there still exist the same number of yanks & other foreigners on this very forum?

Again, can't speak to "then". But there are always two sides to the story.

Have a look at the title winners after Jimmy Hill got the ruling about the salary cap in this country. There isn't the diversity you might think. Now we have the big four; then we had the big five. In fact, it's fair to say we bought the 1963 title.

I prefer "then" because I was young then and things seemed better somehow. Also, people have changed a bit. I can't ever remember people talking about obstructed views, they were simply glad to get in. People got together in groups more often ... these days we are very individualistic.

Perhaps it was partly the money thing. Perhaps it was partly the older generation who had spent so much time together in the services during the war and had that community thing going on. Nowadays, we seem to relate to each other via the web rather than face to face. NOT saying that this is always bad (good to hear from overseas for example), but maybe you lose something.

Sky? Without the Jimmy Hill ruling, there'd have been no extreme wages, but should football players have their earnings limited? Who else would put up with it???

That's a very good point but it's also fair to say that when the rs were dominating football in the 70s and early 80s they weren't spending as much as Utd and weren't spending more than the likes of us, Spurs, Leeds, Man City, Tottenham etc

Fair points mate and yes there is always two sides to every story. I still preferred THEN though !! Ha ha

Yeah mate probably the whole thing has changed more and has attracted different types of people into the sport. I just think that its crazy that a club pays riduculous wages out to players and then doesn't have money spare to attract new players. The whole idea behind football is that it is essentially an interest, hobby , past time, obsession . . call it what you will but when twenty teams enter into a competition its ridiculous that only two can win it and with no real hope for the rest ?? What's the point ??

Hey, don't get me wrong my friend. When you & other respected Evertonians on this forum speak of "then" as you do, I have absolutely zero doubt in what you say. Only wish I could've been around to witness & appreciate myself.

That said, I very much look forward to sharing new moments & memories which are sure to come, on the very near horizon.

Just as soon as our Yanks put da hurtin' on those cowardly little lions this summer!

Nice one mate and appreciated by the way. Yeah then all the way mate for me, the excitement as the season was building up, seeing the new players and because they were not as accessible as nowadays it was more exciting. Also for me seeing quality players that other teams had and could KEEP for a lot longer than now made it for me.
