Poll: Should we attempt to tie Ronald Koeman to a new, improved contract like we did with Martinez?

Should we try to tie down Koeman for longer asap?

No...because it'll stand in his way of becoming Barcelona, Juventus or Real Madrid manager.

We have to be realistic and understand that the manager of the 7th placed team in the PL will be head hunted sooner rather than later.
Unbelievably, this is something we agree on 100% @davek . It had to happen sooner or later didn't it!;)

You cant stop talented people bettering themselves, it's unnatural.

He'll be at the Nou Camp next season. It's just inevitable. They've seen what he's done with Everton - the signing of star players like Bolasie and Ashley Williams, the 50 odd points in a single season - and will be determined to get some of that Europa League action themselves.

If I thought he'd accept it, i'd offer him a twelve month extension and effectively keep him on a three year rolling contract. But, there are people in the world who are staff and want to stick around have some long term roots and then there are the contractors who like to go in, get the job done and then go and do something else ( obviously there are some in the middle too ).

Koeman's whole mentality screams contractor.

What about next season though Dave? Should we actually win a trophy or finish fourth would you give credit were it's due to Koeman?

That depends on how real he gets. Has he ever been on such a lucrative contract as this in his life or could expect that from a move 'up'? I doubt it. I think also as he gets older he'll realise that the established big British and Euro clubs aren't looking at him seriously, as his CV is pretty poor in all honesty.

I think he'll be another Moyes in the sense he stays here for a few more years and hands Everton the type of safe PL finishes required when you're (apparently) getting a new stadium built.

A good example of this would be the OP @mixed_up who today wants to give Big Ron a bumper contract after one season... :bye:

The last comment is the last they made in the Koeman thread in January. What are you doing? lol You are so impressed with him that you wanna give him a contract extension but you haven't found the time to post in his thread since that comment dismissing our league position half way through his first season?

Oh lawdy

Whilst Koeman or me, is, a vastly superior manager (hindsight... wonderful thing), its a very difficult place to be in.

  • One year into a three year deal, if we smash it next year, he's got a year left and could easily have his head turned
  • He's on £8m a year, for him to accept a new deal, itd have to be improved so we're realistically looking at £9-10m a year, which is a lot, especially if things go all "Roberto" for him
  • Is case that he may not want the contract. Koeman is notorious for not sticking round for long, but without doubt the Everton job surely has to be the most appealing one hes had so far (Valencia were in decline, Benfica weren't too sharp, and whilst PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord are all prestigious clubs, surely, the financial aspect - in both senses - makes Everton his biggest job to date so far), maybe he wont want to renew.
For me, I'd be saying to him, get us Top four, or better, and we'll let you name your price. But without trying to sound like I'm undermining the job he's done so far, if we were to put Koeman in the top 2-3 salaried managers in the World, he needs to push on next season and get us competing for Top 4 and beyond. We're making magnificent progress, so of course I'm wary of him being poached, or being annoyed at the contract situation, but that said... I think i could be a October-November review point for me.

No reason not to offer him a one year extension. I think he'd be happy to sign up to that after a good summer window.

It's a no for me. There are plenty of examples of teams doing okay one year and bad the next (or vice versa) and it's difficult to isolate the impact the manager has until they've been at a club a bit longer. Lets give him a second season and we can really judge how influential he is.
