James McCarthy

I dont see it. I dont see the blend with Gueye. That partnership has us too deep in our own half. It's a bit like Barry/McCarthy was...a belt and braces approach which is way too conservative against most opposition. The McCarthy role worked on Saturday because he played in a slightly more advanced position.

Suppose we may see gana play the place McCarthy did, no reason he can't as he has great anticipation and an engine which is amazing. As I said Dave a lot of options now for us, not gonna be easy for an opposing manager to work out coming into a game.

So McCarthy has done his hamstring in...and not an Irish game in sight. I wonder how Ronald will account for that? :coffee:

Too much footy too young, sad as he really looked to have played his way back into the squad and started looking like the McCarthy of 3 years ago.

That's true. It can also bring a headache...an unwelcome one. Imagine Moyes with these choices! Defo a manager who was best when he picked who wasn't injured.

I honestly would like to see us set up like this on Saturday (with or without McCarthy).

Robles

Holgate
Williams
Funes

Coleman
Gana (McCarthy if fit - as he deserves his starting place atm)
Schneiderlin
Davies
Baines

Barkley
Lukaku

In away games, I think Kev's impact is limited if he plays from the start at times.

I want to see us keep it nice and tight but have plenty of energy from midfield to get forward.

I think if we had the options of Kev, Lookman and Valencia form the bench we'd also be in a great position to switch things up.

Ross is in great form overall atm but we saw vs Stoke that he got a bit crowded out and bogged down in midfield.

In fairness, Boro aren't as 'aggressive' as Stoke were, but they may still look to target that. Ross up further with Rom gives us a totally different dimension, especially when you've got that energy from midfield joining in.

Feel sorry for the lad but in my opinion he needs a complete break to get over his hamstring demons. No internationals, just completely rebuild and come back 100% fit. We have Gueye raring to go, Davies deserving game time and Besic returning to fitness. Probably the one area of the team we can take a loss in. Who said we didn't need Schneiderlin though?

Koeman seems to like to rotate and pick sometimes depending on the opposition as well though, so we will see I guess mate.

I'd rather have too many options though than ending up playing theclujes of osman as a centre mid alongside Neville though that's for sure.

Hopefully McCarthy isn't a serious one, if it is though then suppose it's a great chance for davies to make himself a permanent starting fixture.

Btw think we are starting to finally see us moving more towards the higher pressing koeman wants from us, McCarthy at the, heart of that so hopefully see gana take on that role now, it instantly transforms us when doing it.

Next weekend will be interesting, much as I've loved Barry here, hope we don't see him starting with schneiderlin again, on that score I think it's too defensive

Scneiderlin, Davies and Gana is one hell of an energetic midfield and each brings something different.

Shame about JMs hamstring if true. This has been my problem with him for a while, (same with Besic really - sorry Goat).

Good players for ~20 games a year. We need good players for 40+ games a year.

Maybe. There's a certain amount of player and manager intelligence needed here though. Just cos you're playing those 2 doesn't mean they have to sit 5 yards in front of the CBs. This is where pressing from the front to create a higher line at the back helps.

Which is what the now-broken McCarthy did on Saturday.

Could be mate, honestly no idea how exactly we will set up, just do not want to see Barry starting ahead of Davies or Gueye, gut instinct is we won't see both starting and your team with the exception of lookman in Davies could be the way we go, koeman seems to want a high energy centre mid to be able to come on around the 60 minute mark to give us that energy boost.

NO!!!!!

Ronny said last week he was 2 weeks away, this will be his last week, next week he will train with the team, then probably play an U23 the week after, 2 weeks I reckon, maybe 3. Hes in the final stages, I know theres a desire not to rush things, but hes fairly advanced IMO.
He said he was okay to return to certain parts of training mate with the players. Not full training all the time.

Interesting article here that underlines the blend aspect I touched on earlier with Schneiderlin and Wanyama (though I had it arse about face!).

That suggests a rile slightly advanced for Schneiderlin ahead of a more defensive CM.
