James McCarthy

Scored one made one ran the show in midfield. I hope that wasn't an injury the lad came off with. He's been top class of late and back to his first season best.

The rest he had early this season seems to have done him the world of good- also a bit of pressure maybe removed given the extra competition in that area? Certainly one of the players to stand out in this recent run of games.

Defo mate. All the BS he had to put up with between Koeman and O'Neil/Keane must have been unsettling too.

That issue went away and he got some fitness and settled down. Let's hope a lesson is learned and those named shut their grids when the international selection comes up again in the spring.

I was really pleased to see McCarthy have an excellent 45 yesterday.
In order to really compete in this league you need a strong squad, not just a strong 11-16 players.
We have top class competition now in the most important area of the pitch. A complete transformation from a couple of months ago.

McCarthy was never the greatest passer, but he loves to make those surging runs and link up with players. When players like Barkley and Lukaku are at their best, McCarthy is allowed to do what he does best which is link up quickly and move. Always brings energy on the defensive side as well. Barry should have been the one to come off imo

I recken mcarthy was pulled off to protect him from injuries as he been dealing with a few over the last 10 months

Got to say out central mid is probably now the best we have had in a long long time lots of options including jimmy. I want him to do well and we know he's got it in him
I've got to admit, when I saw three defensive midfielders starting yesterday I was slightly perplexed and thought it was far too negative.

However, the three of them have added that grit we so dearly missed for a long time (no longer being bypassed) but were also attacking minded.

It also lets the likes of Barkley, Lukaku and our wider players obtain more freedom and actually make some effective moves.

Koeman expressed concerns as Everton manager that if JM played for ROi having had so little game time, he would undo his rehab and get injured again. MON expressed his outrage at this, JM played and promptly got injured again for another two months. and the lesson Ron needs to learn from this is to keep his mouth shut.
ok

It looks like McCarthy is trusting his body more to go at full pelt. I also think he and Koeman will have had words and have aired out some grievances on both sides. He was fantastic yesterday, making and scoring goals on top of everything else he does.

The first season he was fantastic for us. For much of the second season he was very good particularly when you consider his injury. Compare our results in that second season with him versus when he was out of the team. There was a marked difference. I always think thats a good indicator of a player.

What I liked about the end of that second season was he was getting forward more. Remember his goal against Manchester United? It was a fantastic old fashioned central midfield goal. I really thought that summer he would pick on into being a proper box to box midfield player who would add 6 or 7 goals a season to his game. The third season though he reverted to just sitting in front of the back 4. Whether this was Martinez's tactics, other players in discipline, lack of trust in others or concerns over his body I am not sure. In truth he is not a good enough footballer to just sit in front of the back 4 doing what Carrick (and Barry/Schneiderlin do).

Anyway it's great to see him getting back to his best. I think given the quality we have in that area we need to move away from the idea that players will play every game. Clearly there will need to be rotation of personnel and systems to allow people to get game time. Perhaps more importantly (specifically for McCarthy) it will allow sufficient rest periods for people to be performing at their best. I still think McCarthy has a big role to play in fixtures against the other top 6 sides in the division in a similar way to how Fergusan used Darren Fletcher.

I hope thats enough to keep McCarthy happy. I am not sure he will be ahead of Davies long term, bit he can be an important squad player in a side that could well be in the champions league, which should be his aspiration.

Looked back to his old self yesterday in the first 45 at least. Obviously the better sides we face will pose different problems, and collectively the central midfield lost their grip on the game for a good 20 minutes in the second half whilst they were on top. However, in the first half, McCarthy, Barry and Schneiderlin were crucial in the centre in starting off attacks and providing the defensive cover.

McCarthy is a very good squad player to have and there are games where he can contribute as a starter, as shown yesterday in the first half.

Koeman was piped right down in the end. Hopefully he keeps piped down.

Which Koeman? The one that could of sold him to Newcastle but always valued him at Everton even though had had been out of the side?
No hopefully Koeman keeps piped up as he is getting is so right now it's hard for some idiots to actually see what a class job he is doing
