James McCarthy

Thing is mate, think ahead, soon as Gueye is back we then have him, Schneiderlin and Davies there, unless two of them are injured at the same time, then McCarthy will only get minutes at the expense of one of them (probably Davies you'd guess)

Thats not even countign the fact Barry is not exactly gonna suddenly never get played again either

When we have a lot of holes still in the squad carrying a player of McCarthys worth/stature/ability is probably a luxury

That's pretty much what I meant.

Be a bit weird if he went though. Didn't Koeman say there's no way he'd leave in January?

I think we are all excited to see Gana, Schneiderlin and Davies together, but if one of those got an injury we could end up light in that area and despite Barry having a decent game yesterday we need to be looking at running his paying time down. We need to keep him until the end of the season at least.

"There’s no chance James will leave in January – I don’t know about interest for him," the Dutchman told the Liverpool Echo.

"After the summer yes, but not now because the player has shown what I like – he has shown his quality and now it is important for this player to get some long time fitness and not be disrupted by injuries."

not like managers ever tell a porkie or 2 is it tho...

Isn't that the very glut of players I pointed out to you last week as evidence we need to prioritise away from CM in this window...and you said we were short there?

In spite of what RK says I could see James McCarthy leave at the very end of the window.

By then Gueye will be within a game or two from returning. Schneiderlin will have gotten more up to speed with his game and both Davies and Barry will be there as well.

It will probably take a very big bid, but McCarthy is a player that a lot of managers will want in their side. RK has not said that he wouldn't be sold just not in January.

The high intensity, aggression and speed of the position as Koeman sees it means injuries, breakdowns, suspensions and different requirements per match might mean we need 5 for 2/3 positions. Its not about this season don't forget, its about being ready for August. If we were to get a Europa spot then you'll definitely need numbers in there. Just need 2 more good wingers now, a top defender, keeper and a play maker and it could be game on next season.

Won't be too bothered if he goes tbh, we have better options there and its be nice to get a bit of money for him. He simply doesn't stay fit long term unfortunately.

Two things I don't understand here. Firstly, why would he take an enormous step down to go and play in the Championship for Newcastle? He's been a Premier League player for the majority of his career and is a 7th-10th Premier League standard player.

Secondly, it seems strange that people mention his injury problems (which he has had admittedly), but then suggest Besic will take his place. McCarthy has been a far better player for Everton than Besic has, and has been far more reliable as a player, despite his injuries.

Besic has played 31 times over the last 3 seasons. McCarthy has played more than 31 games in all 3 of his seasons since he's been here. I reckon Koeman likes McCarthy as a squad player. Can only see McCarthy going if a bid comes in of more than £15m and it's at a Premier League club.

Because no one else is in for him and Newcastle are pretty much guaranteed to be in the prem / he'll get first team football

Still a step down for now that I don't think he'll take. Plus Koeman clearly values him as a squad player and due to injuries he hasn't had a run of games to stake his claim in the team. Not saying McCarthy will necessarily want to just be a squad player and that Koeman sees him as an option long term but loads made incorrect assumptions from the start of this season to now about Koeman and McCarthy.

First of all in claiming he's a poor player "cause all he does is run round a bit" which is ridiculous, and secondly saying that Koeman doesn't rate him at all. Whenever McCarthy has been fit he has either started or come on as a sub. Every time.

I didn't say those things mate.

I think he is a decent squad player but he will be 4th/5th choice by the time gana is back and I dont think he fancies that
