reports all over Irish websites today that Koeman is open to offers for James after signing yer man from United
can anyone give me a direct link to where he actually said this?

I think Schneiderlin signing makes McCarthy's departure inevitable now.

For 18 months I thought McCarthy was excellent for us. Gave us an energy we hadn't had in our midfield for years. Then, as the Martinez regime started to crumble, McCarthy did along with it. Injuries and poor form meant he went from one of the first names on the teamsheet to us questioning his worth to the side.

When fit, he still brings great energy to the team - his performance against Arsenal and how we crumbled in the derby after he went off go to show how valuable that energy can be sometimes, but he has never had the quality with the ball, the positional nous or the tactical awareness that you'd want from someone in defensive midfield. You look at Gueye who has essentially more or less all of the attributes that McCarthy has, but a few more to go along with it and then you realise how limited he is. The one thing he does have to his game that we've never quite managed to get the most of is an ability to burst from midfield to join the attack - goals against Man Utd the other year and Norwich at home last season gave a glimpse about how he could time runs from midfield if given the licence to do so.

Still, he'll do a good job for someone. If he can get over his injuries, he'll do well in the right sort of system as he brings an energy that relatively few midfielders in the league have. He's on a good contract now and the rumblings all season have been that he wants first team football. Schneiderlin didn't want to sit on the bench at United and you have to respect that attitude, ditto if that's how McCarthy feels. If (when) he goes, I would wish him well.

We still need options even with Schneiderlin, especially as Barry is ageing and Besic has yet to achieve a sustained period of fitness

I'd be disappointed to see him go, unless we have sufficient back up brought in

Maybe that's why we're after the lad from Atalanta?

I'd go with one of the following scenarios

1 - If we don't sign the lad from Atalanta, we keep Jimmy Mac in until the rest of the season. If he does well for the remainder, we keep him on

2 - If we don't sign the lad from Atalanta, we keep Jimmy Mac in until the rest of the season. If stanks the joint out we move him on in the summer and sign Reuben Loftus-Cheek

3 - If we sign the lad from Atalanta, move Jimmy Mac on in the current window or in the summer

Can't see him leaving somehow, would leave us a bit short.

Gana, Morgs, Barry, Davies, James

He's 5th choice at worst, Gibson and Clev aren't in his plans and I doubt Besic is now either. James is a crock too though so I'd sell him and get someone else in.

We signed the lad from atalanta I'd be shocked mate, either way think McCarthy himself will push for a move this month. Not that bothered either as it opens up opportunities for davies and possibly Walsh,

This site is quoting from Kirkbride...

“My understanding and my feeling is that he probably won’t leave. Everton have discounted any suggestion that he would leave on loan. I don’t think they would want to do that and anybody looking to buy James would need to make a serious offer.

He was bought for £13 million in the summer of 2013. Although he’s had his injury problems, to sell him, the figure would have to increase. Certainly, with the interest from the Championship, I think that’s put a lot of teams off.
“His stock with the manager seems to have ebbed and flowed. Early on this season, Koeman seemed to have almost disregarded him a little bit and made his mind up.

“But once he got himself fit… He played really well, he started three consecutive league games and was particularly good against Arsenal

It’s a bit difficult at the minute with James, I think Ronald still has doubts and I think he’s been made to reassess given the performances James has shown when he’s fully fit.
“A significant amount of the doubts stem from his fitness record of late. There’s a place for him maybe not from the start. I don’t think he sees him necessarily as first choice, but I think Ronald is beginning to like the idea of him as an option.

But I wouldn’t hang my hat on saying he’s definitely staying in January, because things can move and change very quickly this month.”
