Gareth Barry

Just like he was impeding Man City when he was a key player in a title-winning side?

Not every CDM needs to be a Gueye-type player who makes 6 tackles and covers 15km a game. In fact, if Everton had 2 x Gueye in CDM it would be a bit of a train wreck because ball distribution going forwards wouldn't be good enough.

As an outsider looking in, I am a little stunned that of all the issues Everton have had over the past 3 or 4 years, you think Gareth Barry is the player that has been impeding you.

I agree with parts of this post, he's been great for us. But the past is the past, otherwise we'd still have Dixie Dean up front and Neville Southall in goal.

Yep of course - not trying to argue that Barry should keep his spot going forwards (other than for however long it takes for Schneiderlin to sign and be integrated into the team), just saying that IMO he has been just about the least of your worries over the past few years.

He's been given some unfair stick at times aye.

He's been impeding us for years, it's amazing how bad it needs to get before people can see it.

People cling to the notion of him being good because he was good at City and all the media tell them that he is so experienced. You can't be wrong on an Internet forum if you're supporting Gareth Barry. The truth is he was a decent stop gap for Martinez's first season but should not have featured after that. The contract extension is criminal. I was so pleased when Fellaini left because I thought we'd finally see some decent quick midfield play again at Goodison, to then have been encumbered with Barry for 4 seasons has been dreadful. If Koeman cannot see this he will go the same way as his predecessor.

Could well be all of that ... could also be that he is out of form now and lacking confidence.

The first 3 months, Barry and Gueye were basically the only two pieces of this team functioning properly. In fact, fair to say that Barry was actually playing well through to November.

So can it be that his age has all of a sudden caught up with him in the space of 6 weeks, or could it also be a case of a player now out of form after a few sub-standard outings?

Reality is that he isn't going to be starting for much longer, with Schneiderlin expected and Gueye back in a month, they will be starting if fit and Barry + Davies will be on the bench. He is just needed for literally one more month, at which point it would become quite alarming should he continue to start going into February, March and beyond.

Yes mate, that tends to happen to 36 year old central midfielders.

I'm sorry but he is the main reason why we aren't performing anymore.

The minute he is in the team we are terrible, take him out of it and we look half decent. Did he start vs Southampton? Leiscter the other week? Arsenal? Our best performances come from him not playing. Everything isn't perfect and the team have struggled without him also but then that is down to other players. Going back to the derby, we suddenly looked awful the minute he had to come on.

The fact that all our recent wins had him on the bench and all our terrible results bar Watford had him in the team.

He started at Leicester the other week but I agree in principle Zat.

We're too slow with him in there.

He can't be starting games on the reg any more. He's useful as a last 10/15 min sub to control the game in an instance where we need to do that, and then for the odd start.

But, he's our only option at the moment - as in a player who can at least get his foot on the ball in midfield - which is why Schneiderlin is evidently the number one target.

Gareth Barry was and is a very good football player.

In the first part of the season he was playing better than he has in ages.

The issue is his lack of pace and now that we're trying to switch to a different way of playing, he needs to become bit-part.

However, to do that you need a replacement who is top class.

Koeman is willing to spend £24m on one. So clearly, he knows the issues.

???????

He should never put on the shirt again. If he had anything about him, he'd do a Phil Neville and hold his hands up and admit his career at this level is over.

I'm sick of seeing him trying to run in to people too late, and players just running past him or passing around him. We sit back cos he is surviving in games instead of playing in them. He drops deep cos he doesn't have the legs to move up and down. He doesn't close down the space he is mean't to and it puts great pressure on the players around him.

There really is no coincidence that we look poor when he is playing, and suddenly look much more mobile when he isn't.

he did yes, but it wasn't until he was replaced with davies we looked a threat

Because as an outsider looking in you have been fed the media line that a club like Everton should be downright ecstatic to have a player like Gareth Barry, even when he has been absolutely crap and of bottom half standard for the last two and a half seasons.

The reason he stopped playing for Manchester City nearly four years ago is because he was no longer good enough to compete at that standard, and he stopped being good enough for Everton about two seasons ago, when we started finishing in the bottom half and have failed to manage a top half finish ever since.

The feller is way, way off top half standards these days, there isn't another top half club where he would be a first team starter. He's been finished for ages.
