Aldi?

Love Aldi and Lidl. Lidl bacon is lovely- proper slices not like the wafer thin see through stuff Asda sell. I also love all the random items they sell. If any of you go skiing,* Aldi's ski clothes consistently get better ratings for value and quality than established brands.



* I don't, I have the co-ordination of a slightly bevvied octopus. Skiing would be a death sentence.

The two reasons we use Aldi.

Perfect for the basics and excellent for cheap party type food if you're having a shin dig.

Aldi's Puglian olive oil is very well regarded and beats most other brands that are many times the price, so nab a few bottles the next time you pass by one:

Lidl's fresh produce is vastly superior to the junk that ASDA flog. Their salad is usually gone off before you get it home.

I have a Lidl 100yds from my house, and I tend to use it for stuff I'm using that day, so in that sense, the shelf life of the fresh stuff rarely impacts me.

It is great going out for milk and bread, and coming back with an artist's easel, a pneumatic drill, and a bottle of Lithuanian vodka.
 

BTW, Dunno about Aldi, but if you are in Germany then Lidl is SUPERB. The quality of the foods is vastly superior to anything you can buy here for just about anything. Stuff like.. butter actually tasting like it came out of a cow.

French supermarkets are way better than ours for fresh food.

Just for some random info, Aldi is actually two companies, north and south Aldi, owned by two brothers with distinct geographical areas. UK and USA get Aldi Sud, which is known as Hofer in Austria.

Aldi/Hofer is very good and cheap for fresh produce in Germany/Austria (compared to general supermarket chains) and has been pushing its own bio/healthy lines of late. Lidl does a good line in fortnightly geographical specials - can get decent Cheddar, marmelade, frozen fish and chips, etc., under the Hatherwood brand if you keep an eye out. Another similar one which I'm not sure has expanded overseas is Penny from the Rewe supermarket chain.

To be fair the supermarkets like Tesco don't rip people off at all. Supermarket profits are thin. In fact, all supermarkets lose money on every single home delivery they do. Not many people know that.

Aldi and Lidl have succeeded by offering a much smaller product range which reduces their costs. A large Tesco could have twenty times as many products on sale as a typical Aldi.

I buy both of these ( both excellent ) and also their wine range is very good too. I think one of their own brand champagnes won an award.

I quite often go in with the sole intention of buying ale and come out with stuff like a new tent, sleeping bag, running gear, tool kits and torches.

Every week is like a lucky dip !


* the staff can be a bit arsey if you haven't brought your own bags and pay by card.
