Ross Barkley

...I'm now of the opinion we need better. If the manager wants to keep him, fine but I think a truly top and consistent player in that position will make a difference. He does some daft things on the pitch that make you wonder, when Lukaku put him in the 2nd half, I was waiting for him to bury one in the far corner but he side footed it at the keeper. He did well for his goal, he does some really good things but he's simply not capable of running games on a week by week basis.
We have bigger problems to sort first silva Ozil pick whoever you want would be poor in this set up/team. Until Ronald grows a pair & bombs jags & Barry completely out of the squad we're going nowhere.

..I'm sure he'll be looking to bring in better than we have in lots of positions, Simon. I'm not 100% happy with everything the manager has done from a tactics perspective, but he's now had a good look at his squad and I don't think he's overly keen on many. What he has done is get us an adequate points return with players he's having to make do with, let's judge him when he brings in his own.

For me ross is carrying the weight and expectaion of the team and the pressure is to much. Its amplified by having players like jags and barry in the team. We want to see him try things and show his brilliants but if he looses the ball we are up the kreek as barry doenst have the legs for midfield and the 2 centre backs arent mobile enough. Id like to see ross the deepest of 3 in centre mid with 2 players like gana and currently davies that can press the opposition and when they win the ball barkley is open in the middle. Being the deepest he should have a little more time on the ball which should enable him to either look for a killer pass or to take the ball and drive up the field. He then needs lukaku and the wingers to move to open up some differnet options for passing.

I think the same could be said about all our players except Gueye and Lukaku.
But let's all kick Barkley while he's down should we.
In truth, we need better than Lukaku as well but this is about Barkley. I could ramble on about his frailties but the nitty gritty of it is; he doesn't have the head for it. A change in club is probably the best route for him now.
Actually laughable how some blues walk on eggshells round the subject... they want Everton to be great again but can't grasp the idea of a successful Everton without Ross Barkley.

...he had a free kick against the Reds where he tried to roll Coleman in who was 3 yards away from him, he didn't put enough weight on it but Coleman did well to recover and get it back to him. He promptly hit an attempted cross into the top tier of the Gwladys St.

2nd half last night we had a free kick deep in Hulls half, he rolled it 5 yards to one of their players and they broke. They were attempted passes to players in his proximity and the outcome was abject. It's an amazing excuse that he can't pass to Everton players because they aren't close to him.

As majority of the time when Barry's on the movement of our players is so abject that his options to pass are extremely limited. It's noticeable when Davies or Mccarthy partner gueye that suddenly he seems to play so much better. I'm also of the belief though that he's blind as a bat as those passes you mention were just ridiculous, I reckon he's like Steptoe and sons greyhound, full of ability but needs a to be wearing a huge pair of gigs to be able to achieve it

Let's face it mate. You really don't like Barkley and nothing he does will change your mind.
Happy New Year.

...that's simply not the case, Matey. I fully supported him last season when his assists and goals return reflected a real improvement. I commented on here that some of the things he does reminds me of Bobby Charlton, high praise indeed. I'd be chuffed if he turned things around but his inconsistency just frustrates me.

I think the bottom line is that he doesn't appear capable of playing the role RK wants him to play. I don't dislike the boy but he's playing in a key position and not positively impacting games on a week by week basis. If he can do that he'll be fine with me but it's not happened so far.

...nice post. I actually think he always linked well with Deulofeu, so the points you make are fair but if he is the player we hoped he'd make things happen anyway. He might be more Hercules than the greyhound (only joking but couldn't resist)!!

Not many egg-shell treaders on this forum.

Agreed but its becoming Martinez Tim Howard & Barry is clearly no longer a premier league player not is jags & they are being slated it doesn't need to be this way. He doesn't have many option but here he does Davies has to play before Barry as does mori or holgate over jagielka.

People can blame squads all they want but these decisions aren't acceptable

...yep, travelling back from Hull last night we were wondering if Davies might actually start against Soton. I wouldn't disagree at all on that point but he might just be managing the youngster well. I also thought he might play Mori given he's better in the air and the threat they would carry with Snodgrass delivery but he went with Jagielka. The Hull CF is a physical brute so I can only think he went with Jagielka because of his upper body strength.

Thought 2nd half he came alive when Davies came on but he got in some positions first half that a confident Barkley capitalises on.
Laces through the ball on the one he side footed. It screamed lack of confidence from a player with a great shot on him. No one looks like they're enjoying the game at the moment, but Ross more than most seems afraid to make mistakes.
