Everton reply to Times investigation and it's two no's

Maybe they're doing just that. It's hardly a 5 minute job. Better to say nothing than say something we ultimately regret.

Indeed, its not like the director of comms can just walk around with a list sticking his head into rooms and asking if anyone has been molested etc.

Also if nothing has happened then they dont really need to answer. Got to tread very carefully with stuff like this.

There is a right and a wrong way to deal with this issue. Personally I don't think the right way is to dance to a tune played by the press. I thought people on here would have a better understanding of how the British press work.
Again I say If Everton fully and honestly cooperate with the proper authorities then that is good enough for me. They could issue a general statement in regard to the club's position.

The press are all over this story and salivating in a way only they can despite historically being almost as complicit as the FA and the clubs involved .

This scandal isn't a new story , allegations have been repeated during trials and offenders convicted but the press cosied up next to the clubs to continue to protect their own positions and keep their special relationships. I sincerely and honestly hope Everton have nothing to hide over this but I also hope we'll conduct ourselves in a manner the club seems to have done in the past with dignity and not be dictated to by a press desperately trying to cover their own failings .

I dont think it's The Times or any other media outlet that are deciding when and if clubs make statements.

It's really up to the FA and Premier League to coordinate all this.

I find it totally unbelievable that football correspondents didn't know about any of this, why was there been little or no reporting of this before now.

Remember this was responding to two simple straight questions. It asked:

have you got anyone to sign an NDA related to sexual assault

Have you paid out anyone in compensation in relation to sexual assault.

Thirteen Premier League teams have firmly answered this.

Opinions differ, mine is if you can answer, you do - ideally no. Alternatively, if we have done it, get the poison out and move on.

Very easy to have a half arsed reply ready to go for the first Journo digging around. Much better for the club to be conducting a thorough investigation to see if there ever was an issue and that if there was that it is being addressed and handled properly with the well being of any victims as the key driver - not the thirst of some journo, baying wolf pack or well meaning public.

As said, we have a very poor comms set up. I think it's very likely that we couldn't get that info reliably, so we just said nothing. If we'd have said no but then unearthed something that had been buried, we'd have then publicly lied.

Again, this stuff is not readily available in a handy excel spreadsheet.

Compensation = hush money. Not the sort of thing that's stated on your annual accounts. To say 'No' now, only for a victim to come forward with evidence of an off-the-books payment, would be catastrophic.

we're also talking stuff that went on in the 70s and 80s. Who at the club would really know that now?

It's the sort of thing that you'd think the club would have been prepared for, given the prominence of this story.

Hopefully it's just a case of them needing to clarify behind the scenes, because no matter how dismissive we as fans may be of the press, the silence will soon become deafening.
