Didn't at Wembley '89, but didn't boo either.
But I did join in, just once, the night of Hillsborough in a pub in Sheffield, spontaneous singing in the pub when News/MOTD came on. Lived in Sheff at the time and used to walk into town past the train station on way to the Poly. Was horrible seeing grieving families arriving/leaving each morning/evening. Never since, and discretely left when maudlin claptrap song comes on at family weddings

In junior high during the Johnson administration, I had a monstrous crush on a certain Vicki M.'s breasts, and she was in chorus. I managed to get enrolled so I could study the situation further, and part of the program was a rendition of that song. I was young and unaware of the implications later in life.

I have to admit to singing it a couple times in the aftermath of Hillsborough, at a couple of tributes I was attending.

I was there with the Wife and we didn't sing it.
Would never sing it. The closest is the soap version as pointed out by others.
Nowadays if I'm singing the soap version in response to some rs singing then I know it's time for home.
I hate it and my skin crawls every time I hear the opening bars.

I loved the musical, Carousel and I bought the LP and the G+P version when it came out. I think I have five versions of ynwa on the
collection albums I've accumulated over the years. I want to like the song but it's got harder over time since they hijacked it.

I can listen to the original Gordon McCrae - Shirley Jones version and switch off the Reds connection, but I can't abide Marsden's.

When I watch them play at home on TV I always press mute until they kick-off.

It was hard when they played it at my brothers funeral but it was out of my control.

Under what circumstances would it be acceptable for that song to be played at Goodison.


Our team comes out to the theme from a 1960s cop show that we share with Watford (?). Grand old team gets an airing quite a few times and not just on the terraces, on the tannoy, quite a few other clubs use that too. Playing devils advocate like.

It's a very old song called Johnny Todd. Z Cars tv series is just a version done in the 60's. Google it buddy. Cheers

It might be an old song, but we didn't start it at Goodison until 1963-64.

I don't know if you all remember, but in the 1989 Cup Final the pre-match entertainment was Liverpool based. People were singing the folk songs like "Maggie May" and "The Leaving of Liverpool" which was great. Then Gerry Marsden came out and encouraged everyone to sing "that song". Bearing in mind what had occurred, I suppose I don't blame my dad for singing along, especially as there wasn't as much hatred back in those days. But even on that occasion, I couldn't bring myself to sing it. I can't watch Carousel (and I really like musicals), and any time it comes on the radio or TV I have to turn it off.

So who sang it in 1989, have you ever sung it (maybe at a RS mate's funeral) and in what circumstances would you?

I think if my mate, who is a reasonable enough bloke for a RS, asked me to sing it at his funeral I'd do it grudgingly!!

YES,a couple of weeks after the HILLSBOROUGH DISASTER, football fans all over SYDNEY, had a fund-raiser for the families of the victims, it was in a hall in BONDI JUNCTION supported by fans of every football club you could think of , Rangers,CELTIC Villa and of course EVERTON . I don't think it was being played at Goodison in 1963-64. Could be wrong, but I was at Goodison quite often in the 1970's and it wasn't
played then. I don't even remember it being played the last time I went in 2006.

Go on, put me out of my misery someone - when did we first run on to Johnny Todd.

I went to most of the Derbies in the 80s and 90s, must have been around early 2000s where I gave the Derby up as it was just getting too poisonous. To be honest, reading some of the posts on here, I'm not surprised the Derby has gone the way it has. It saddens me, it really does that some people on here can actually resort to physical violence upon hearing a song ffs. I never thought I'd say it, but reading this thread leaves me in doubt as to where some of the fault lies for the Derby being what it is today. Both sets of fans have their share of idiots,we know that, but if that's the way some of you act when you hear 'that' tune, I find it really sad.

Alright mate, how many red scousers would sing the full got either, similar song in respects to ties to the club, answer us not many

I didnt get a ticket for that final and watched it in a pub if mainly RS. When it came on everyone in the pub was singing their hearts out and at least half of them were crying too. I just had my head bowed looking at my half empty glass on the table. Gob firmly shut. Also stood with my head bowed at a good mates funeral. He died of cancer at 60. That was only a year or 2 ago.

No matter what the occasion I dont think I could ever bring myself to sing those words.

Respectful silence Is for me the right thing, May sound petty or whatnot, honestly don't care, but myself personally would never sing it, much in a similar way I won't sing hymns etc at funerals of good friends because to do so would be hypocritical given I don't believe and the words would be hollow.

Anyway not gonna slate any blue that did either, down to there own feelings about it.

Thanks, mate, but I'm even more confused. That Echo article was very interesting but it didn't fill all the gaps, unless I've missed something.

I don't think Z Cars has been played continuously at Goodison since 1962 with a couple of short gaps, but I could be entirely wrong.

I'm getting on now and my memory isn't all that, but I just don't remember hearing it when I've been to GP.
