Ross Barkley

He has... his goals scored stat is ok... but he doesn't score enough to warrant us changing our formation to 4-5-1 to accomodate him.. 4-5-1 is meant to make it easier to keep possession and also make it harder for the opposition to play through you... he loses the ball far to often and he DOESNT RUN OR TACKLE and I don't mean he doesn't do it often.... I mean literally... he does not tackle... if you played 4-4-2 and changed him for a striker I am pretty sure his replacement would put score him.

We haven't 'changed' to a 4-5-1 to accommodate him? We've played a variant of 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 for the past 10 - 15 years.

He needs to improve - but he was superb the first half of last season and for the majority of his first season with us (bare in mind he had a bad injury second year as well that he took a while to come back from).

Any stats on tackles made/won?

I think this is the main thing Koeman talks about when wanting Ross to 'take more responsibility'.

In the last few seasons he has had an easy ride in terms of not tracking back etc.

Now he is actually doing that - he's putting a shift in. He's just lacking the form and he either seems to lose the ball going forward or commit a foul.

But he never was and never is going to be a tough tackling midfielder.

How many tackles did Lampard ever make?

He said on Monday Night football before the Sunday game that he watched Everton games with Spanish lads at Valencia, dont remember him say coaches or players and that whoever they were, all commented on how good Barkley is and were surprised by how skilful/how much freedom he had in this league.

We take it for granted how good he can be, because we're so used to it.

And when he does make the mistakes, it stands out even more.

Must have been watching YouTube clips of him

Lampard wasn't scoring 20+ goals at 22

I know ... you said lampard didn't tackle and he did alright. Like I have mentioned before lampard was bought for big money because of his performances for westham.. nobody is buying Barkley for big money based on these performances are they?

He wasn't superb at the start of the season last year... he just scored a few goals .. his alround play wasn't superb. It wasn't as bad as it is now tho obviously

'scored a few goals' (12) and got 10 assists... as well as completely being at the heart of our play

He had an excellent start to the season last year and unfortunately tailed off around Feb/March time. He looked sharp early parts of this season and now seems to be in a bit of a rut.

He hasn't looked sharp in parts of this season tho... he put in an improved performance against boro. He scored a free kick and missed a couple of sitters, lost possession countless times and has looked like a div 2 player... all this without any workrate or tackling

He did look sharp - both in pre-season and the first few games. Had a poor half vs Sunderland and bar a decent display vs Boro seems to have hit a rut in the last few weeks.

He hasn't 'looked like a div 2 player', and the workrate is there. He's never been strong in the tackle but until he's played deeper I think he will continue to not get involved in that regard - which is something he should improve and will have to under Koeman.

Sorry mate, that's just bollocks

By all means criticise his current form, but at the beginning of last season he was really good. Came away from the Swansea away game absolutely astounded at how well he had played, so mature. And there were a few games like that. Even my mate who sits next to me who hates Barkley would agree that the first few months of last season he was excellent.

Koemans handled this badly. It's clear to even a fool that Ross is not the most confident of lads, so the last thing he needed was Koeman singling him out for stinging criticism after the Sland game. He could have said we are going to be switching players around a lot in he next few months til w find the right balance, but no he dumped it all on Ross.

He did get the desired reaction though and Ross was splendid against Boro in the next game.

That Ross has let himself down in the two subsequent games is not down to what Koeman said after Sundeland, IMO.
