Ross Barkley

That is why stats stopped measuring only goals and assists about a decade ago. Iniesta is ranked as one of the best players around by measuring stats such as pass completion and direction, ball retention, key passes etc

Exactly.

I have absolutely no idea why people ignore weight of statistical evidence in these situations.

Ross was appalling at the weekend - backed up by, er, lots of dismal output. He wasn't abysmal because Mr S from Woolsville judged him so on the Match of the Day evidence

So why do people keep coming on here and telling us Barkley is as good as Gerrard, Lampard Scholes because he's scored as many at the age of 22?

No, they keep saying that he is as good as them when they were also 22, and that we can't yet be certain if he will be as good as them at age 30 when he gets there in 8 years time.

Not massively sure what the confusion is here.

They are the easiest numbers to make comparisons on.

And we don't have stats on things like key passes from when they were playing.

What we can say for certain is that the statistical models rated Barkley as the 5th best player in the PL last season - which is impressive given his last 10 games.

But the thing is, he is not as good as they were at 22 is he? If people are being brutally honest with themselves. That's not saying he's crap, those were top players contributing massively to their teams winning trophies.

Statistically, he is.

He's 22, he's got what 20 England caps, he hit double figures for assists and goals last year and he's an evertonian.

Let's be honest, do people really have a recollection of how Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes were playing at 22?? In the latter's case, he was playing in one of the finest sides this country has produced, managed by arguably the best manager of his generation and at 22 I imagine he was playing alongside Roy Keane, who could carry him through the weaker games. Barry is fantastic but he's not Roy Keane at his peak level.

Barkley is already a fantastic player. If he is still making these errors at 26, 27, then we worry.

That's why I'm saying stats are not the be all and end all. I do actually remember how good Lampard and Gerrard when they were Ross' age in the early part of the decade, I remember Gerrard bossing teammates around that were 10 years older than him, he dragged that average side up a level. Scholes I don't remember as I was just a nipper, but living in a wool town I know lots of United fans who said he was playing at close to his peak level from his early 20s. By the time he was 24 he'd won about 3 titles and the Champions League.

International caps means very little. Your best mate Cleverley was picking up England caps when he was 22/23, England are awful. I'm not saying he won't get better, obviously. It's just people are lying to themselves by saying he's at the level of early-20s Gerrard and Scholes, he isn't (yet)
