Ross Barkley

He answered all the questions for the last three weeks or so about Lukaku's form diplomatically. He could have done EXACTLY the same here and basically do what he did with the Lukaku questioning: tell the hacks to swing it.

I think he took him off to save him further embarrassment to try and re-build his confidence, hence the chat the next day. I agree Lukaku
didn't play well first half and missed chances but he is a goal scorer and you have to hope/believe that the tide will turn and he will score,
which was the case.

This is getting blown out of proportion look KM had just as bad first half it was a toss up on who between those two you should hook off for Geri as we lacked pace!
It will do no harm to sub RB it will raise his game like any other player who gets hooked off at least we have have a manager now who has twice subbed at half time to change the game in our favour - James MaCarthy did not look chuffed at WBA when the board went up too much is being made of this on RB IMO!

If Koeman wanted to avoid Martinez's mistake he'd have binned the barrack room lawyers who downed tools intentionally not a boy who gives his all when he takes to the pitch.

I'm sorry, he's needlessly hung a talented and good lad out to dry here...maybe because he doesn't fancy taking on a serial moaner like Mirallas or a misfiring Lukaku.

I support Koeman, but I tell you what he will store up some ill feeling if he continues a line that throws his players to the dogs like he has today. Up to him. He'll either be a roaring sucess and win stuff and thereby get away with stunts like this, or he'll be bang average or worse and players will have him out.
Disagree, this exactly what Barkley needs after being pandered to by soft Martinez, his development stalled, I'm all for the occasional boot to kick stars his development and growth.

It's life anyone who has had any success in life has expierenced the same thing.

Love Ross mind, take your medicine lad, let's see what your made of on Sat.
Of these two opinions, I'm closer to Neiler.

Ross wasn't doing too good on Monday, he was brought off and the change worked.

I'm struggling to see how playing Ross while possibly off form will benefit him. If anything it'll destroy his confidence won't it?

I think the point is more along the lines of:

Should Ron have publicly dressed down Ross?

By doing so has he destroyed his career and alienated the fanbase / squad?

It's not benching him or even dropping him that's the questionable part of all this. If Koeman is the manager then he has every right to make those choices. It's the grandstanding to the media over it that's a sticking point for me. There was no need for it whatsoever. If I was a player and he did that I'd think he'd betrayed me.

Moyes did it with Richard Wright and Mirallas. Martinez did it with Baines. Are we to say that just because Koeman is new and has seen an unbeaten run in four games that we ease off criticising him?

“There was a reason to change Ross at half-time because he did not play well, he lost many balls and players of that quality can’t lose those kinds of balls,” the manager said. “We analysed the game as always and had individual talks. I had them with Ross and he needs to improve and, OK, we will see at the weekend.”

He's hardly come out and slated the lad either, said he's a good player and he's not frozen out of his plans, just that he needs to improve

Does a tough management approach actually work with Barkley though?

Moyes played him down and he stagnated
Warnock the bulb publicly humiliated him
Hodgson berated him and we rightly slated him for it

Martinez talked him up constantly and that didn't really do too much either. He's a bit of an enigma is Ross.

No mate, no one is above criticism.

Barkley wasn't having the best game on Monday.

I would've taken him off too. As would a lot of others I've spoken to, and it was the general feeling at half time on Monday from the fans, before the decision had been made to sub him.

Do you suggest we persevere with a potentially out-of-form player, and see them subbed at the 75th minute with too little time for it to have a realistic impact? Because that's what loads moaned at Moyes for doing. Now we have a boss who isn't shy of making a sub to suit us, still there's a problem?

Ok. I personally think that honesty is best.

We all got fed up of Martinez' 'phenomenal' stuff. Sometimes tough love is what's needed.

The truth is sometimes hard to hear, and I don't think Koeman was malicious or nasty about it either.

The problem is mate that while he clearly has all the technique in the world, he just might not have the speed of thought required to be absolutely brilliant. But I think currently we can carry him while he plays his way into form - and we might as well do it against the dross like Stoke and Sunderland (particularly as their midfield are so weak)

Exactly his form is shot. why humiliate even more. The Koeman bashers may like to consider that the manager may have pulled off a master stroke by hooking him to save him from further ridicule.
