Had a great game , not surprising as he wasn't trying to cover for Whelan.
I do believe McCarthy will be a big player for Koeman.

I don,t see anything special about his performance ok he has done a job ,but has he excelled...? Personally i think he has a lot to do to impress the new manager and his coaching staff, if they can get him fitter and more mobile in our opponents half i,ll be a lot more happier that he is in the team ...we shall see..

Correct. He does a job there. Whelan gets in his way. If we were to play a 4-1-2-3 formation he would be good as the defensive shield .

Thought he played very well this evening but went hiding when we were in possession. He could have made himself available a lot more but defensively he was very good.

I think everyone in our entire squad has work to do to convince Koeman they should be in the team tbh. McCarthy more than some others.

That is my biggest problem with him and when he does receive it he has zero vision and can only seem to pass the way he is facing.

He did fairly well tonight but the constant sideways passing gets on my tits, he needs to take more risks

I think he was doing the job he was asked to do.
People criticise players without knowing or understanding what the management have asked of the player.

Tonight, I don't think McCarthy had a licence to go forward , I think his job was to sit in front of the defence and try to cut out any danger and he did this excellently.
I think he barely went past the half way line, he closed off the middle of the park, played the ball off simply and was very effective.

I see that as well, seems to be a desire to offload responsiblity. Does not seem to instigate attacks or going forward much. But all this is appearances could well have been playing to an O'Neill gameplan. The KO stages will be a much different ball game.
