A Statistical Analysis of Koeman's Southampton

Great post @catcherintherye really enjoyed reading that and provided some of the evidance base for my own thoughts, i think we will see players who are bigger in the side he likes his height and physicality seems to me to be throughout the pitch. I wonder are smaller players like say Baines/Besic/Cleverley at risk.

His approach is a direct one, seems very similar to Moyes to me, what impresses me is some of the numbers the support players at Southampton post in terms of goals and assists - something that was lacking under Moyes. Tadic, Mane have posted some top goal and assist stats int he couple of years hes been there.

I think he will have a lower tolerence for the likes of Stones, Barkley and Lukaku and how they have been indulged under Martinez, no bad thing in my eyes and they should come on as a result. I have also noticed he is not afraid to drop high profile players, Pelle, Mane and Tadic have all been victims of this.

It interesting to throw Lukaku into the mix, his first touch isnt great and his aerial ability is prob the weekest part of his game, think part of the success of the style that he employes is making the ball stick in the final third in the first phase once the ball goes in. Im not Lukaku fit into that: it does leave me with other names though: Benteke, Carroll, Giroid just of the top of my head.

Seems all very Moyes like.

Think the southampton stats are all about perspective. He signed players to serve a role within his financial constraints hence pelle and long being his strikers. Give him more money and wages and he could come back with much better players and therefore alter his tactics almost.

granted if dribbling and stuff is less a priority then that probably won't change much but it is like taking a manager from league 2 to the champions league, they certainly wouldn;t be signing akenfenwa as their striker with a much bigger budget.

...interesting how those stats stack up against his other teams. The Soton team might have developed from what he inherited rather than a blank canvas. I don't know if there is a Koeman 'team model', he might just manage this group of players differently.

This is definitely something we have to consider. Unfortunately I don't have relevant data for his Feyenoord days. He is a pragmatist and tellingly said "the best way to play depends on the players you have" and he shifts his system accordingly.

That being said what I do pick up is how much he likes a target man. He signed Pelle from Feyenoord who he used there to great affect. Likewise Long and Austin fit that profile. I am not sure he will shift too far from that.

I think we will be similar to Royle's Everton side that utilised Andy Hincliffe's crossing ability, a solid defense and quite a high pressure game. I suppose what I have tried to do with the comparisons (especially around possession) is show that this can evolve from what we have. I don't expect us to be like Stoke (were) or West Brom but I think we will be less dogmatic with possession.

Overall I think all of these changes will be welcomed by the fanbase. Particularly at Goodison Evertonians do want to see a bit more tempo.

He already worked with Pelle at AZ and signed him from Sampdoria when he was at Feyenoord.

I agree entirely on the tempo part! I also wonder with regards to Lukaku, is if he did remain, could Koeman resurrect the Lukaku we saw in his first season with us? The dreadlocked terror who ran down every keeper, giving them no time to clear their area?

I often wonder if the demise of that kind of play (as well as the demise of our attacking full back play from baines and coleman was due to injuries / team changes or whether it was down to Martinez wanting them to play in a very set manner? last season, Barkley, Lukaku, baies and coleman all became lesser threats due to their reduced mobility, could that have been down to tactics?

Great post Catcher I think whoscored is a really useful site to look at for things like this; can be unappreciated. I think the main thing to consider is that as Koeman appears to be tactically astute so he will play to the strengths of the players at his disposal. I think the Lennon's will struggle because he definitely likes wingers with end product (who doesn't) but I think Ross is fine and the formation will find a place for him. I'm hoping now Martinez has gone though Koeman might come in and think "you know what, 4-2-3-1 doesn't work for these players let's try this" and we find the round holes befitting of our round pegs.

It's exciting times and pre-season will be a great watch.

pretty much what I thought. Certainly does shoe that koeman sits nicely between moyes and Martinez - but certainly should solve the problems we saw last year. Sounding good for me.

I think ross' talent will shine next year. As will geri.

Will be great to see baines pinging crossing in again. For me, this can only happen if the left mid problem is properly solved.

as said in the last week or so. he likes a HOOF to the big man.
Hope you sign pelle and he is a bit of a donkey.

get used to way more of an aerial game compared to what you have been used to recently with a far more solid defence

I wouldn't worry about that too much. He's fine with the odd smaller player as long as they have some battle about them. He absolutely loves Clasie for example and he's tiny.

Not surprised about the aerial thing. We have an absolutely tiny team, reason why Funes Mori is so important as he gives us some much needed height.
