I'd rather work with a powerful country that speaks the same language, has a similar culture and outlook on life and trade than be with a basket case of totally differing cultures whose history is based on fighting with each other on a regular basis and whose economy is going south at a rapid rate of knots.........

Identify the help we got. The likes of Albania and the Balkans have done nothing but cause trouble in Europe. However you dress it up, we are a completely different people in terms of culture and adhesion to the rule of law. To ignore this is daft. If you think it's such a good idea then invite an Albanian male to live in your house, and let us know how that works out........

Pete. My point is that the EU pulls countries up to standards not the reverse. Does not always work, can always do better but that is the principle and one worth contributing to.
Also, the EU business grants and structural funds available in the past were vital to keeping areas like Liverpool from drowning. Just have a look at EU funded projects in the city and the grants that have been available. It has kick started lots of development. Ask anyone from the council. All the private money came in later on the back of EU investment. Speke/Garston a highly succesful example. Next Albania

It was a choice of picking from two devils......I'd still rather be on our own, but if I absolutely had to pick a big economy to join with, it would be the USA rather than the EU.......

It actually will be very easy as it's all mostly in place. People in the UK have to stop being scared of going back out into the big bad world and dealing in trade again. It really isn't that difficult.........

2 pieces of research come to mind. One from Bristol University which is UK specific, one from Stanford and The Sorbonne in Paris which was Europe wide. Out and about right now, will see if I can find some info.
