Why there is a demand for change and the reasons to be optimistic for the future

Lerner spent against a background of increasing operating losses as costs exceeded growth in income.

It is almost impossible for any premier league club to do the same at the operating level due to the size of the increase in broadcasting revenues.

Villa bought very badly and could not use the get out of jail card in accounting terms of regularly selling a player to cover losses (one of the quirks of football accounting).

I'm glad we both agree that Villa signed badly and overspent (fees and wages) and its mandatory Everton +Moshiri do not do the same.

You here that @Neiler ? We just had the sign off from Esk.

GOT's answer to Warren Buffett.

"the sage of Everton Valley" = The Esk.

I said Lerner overspent at a time when at the operating level the club was draining cash - a recipe for disaster in both accounting and cashflow terms.

The situation Moshiri faces is very different. It is virtually impossible for him to create an operating loss from next season on.

I tend to agree with you, if we can get a "manager" to get the potential out of whats in our squad and add more quality in certain positions i think thats the first milestone, if this season has proven anything its being able to identify and maximise what you already have can equal success, being fluid in that with strageic recruiting is important also, look at what Leicester and Spurs did in the close season in term sof signings and look at the success they have had. Not all that glitters is gold.

Very good points mate.

Totally agree Neiler.

We have to mix in top quality signings + bargin buys that exceed expectations (Seamus Coleman) + quality youth players

By doing this we do not become overly reliant on any one rectruitment area.

We also mitigate risk and improve the quality of the squad in the longer term.

All that glitters is not gold.

Everton need to be getting more gold nuggets than our competitors.

One would hope.

However, there is always the risk of someone doing something stupid. Negligence is always a possibility.

Moshiri however has no track record of that. But I am ever cautious.

Don't mean to put a dampener on the atmos, but I won't be kidded by new manager syndrome. Nor am I convinced we'll have a glut of marquee/big money signings (Which I don't think we need more than two, meself...IF we can keep the current squad together)

Consistency at a highly competitive level must be maintained from now on.

I'm not quite at the davek level of 'If the new manager doesn't get top 4 by 'x' then he's out', but we need to see improvement in the first season (Which on the face of it doesn't appear to be that difficult) followed by no less than a reflection that in the second season, with honours or a CL spot by the end of season 3.

I won't accept a replication of this season (or last) as being 'acceptable'. Let's see what moshiri's influence can do for us.

I think you've been entirely reasonable with this criteria.

Also in terms of the recruitment process you've described (I would like three quality signings but too would accept a pair per season).

An excellent post to see on GOT.

Tbh mate, I don't see Moshiri going down a two (Or more) per season route. Not unless the more sought-after players leave. And in the further future certainly not until the revenue streams are improved; be it through a stadium, sponsorship, merchandise etc.

I could be wrong, but I don't see him as a free-spending type.

Maybe in the first season with a new manager we'll see two or more prestige players drafted in; maybe perhaps one in the january window if it looks like something could be on, but after after that I reckon it'll be one per season, with a few squad fillers.

Nevertheless, any sort of (multiple) big name squad additions (Regardless of manager) will still make a welcome change from the days when we were knocking on the door of CL qualification but falling short because we didn't have a pot to piddle in come January.

I'd beg to differ. I reckon he himself will fund one of the signings a year and the remainder will be directly paid for by the club. I foresee this under FFP rules.

What this will do is remove - peaks and troughs.

Or 'Where's the Arteta money Bill?' shouts.

Maybe.

But whatever way it comes about - in the spirit of the thread - it's something to look forward to. ;)

This summer is going to be fascinating that's for sure and we will then be in no doubt what his intentions are. With no Europe next year surely the emphasis will be on signing quality over quantity as we don't need a huge squad, just a couple of big hitters for an instant impact. Then next year will be the time to start building up some strength in depth.

I could put in figures of what I think Moshiri will spend versus the club spend per season for the next three years.

However, loose lips sink ships

I do think ONE is a certainty. Based on Moshiri alone.

TWO is likely based on Moshiri and Club funds.

THREE is possible based on Moshiri and Club funds.

I'm calling caution for all Evertonians.

Usually when an investor comes into a club they like to issue some sort of statement to show their arrival. Up until now we have heard nothing, which is no different from operations at board level for the last 15 years.

Whilst I would like to believe good times are around the corner, the fact Martinez was left in charge until the end of the season is the first alarm bell ringing for me, especially after the complete and utter humiliation the fans we're put through at Anfield.

We know nothing is going to happen overnight, but to let the season just fizzle to nothing and let him stay after what he himself called his "defining week", whilst we sit here watching our neighbours probably qualify for CL footy again just about sums the club up, even though there is nothing we can do about the latter obviously.

We won't be able to attract top drawer players due to the fact we can't offer European football, plus any next tier players will always prefer a move to our neighbours or possibly the likes of Southampton or West Ham due to location.

Whilst I am sure this original post was great in getting everybody more hopeful for the future, I think cautious optimism may be the order of the day for me. After all, it's Everton, unless we appoint a Mourinho who is going to change the whole ethos and thinking throughout the club then the next manager is basically coming in with a bit of a rebuilding job.

Er. No.

If you actually knew where most of the EFC players would live (the same locale as any of the Manchester players would live) there is absolutely no reason for south of England clubs to have an automatic preference to Everton.

This is an utterly biased and negative post - utterly bereft of reality.

If neg rep was available. That post would have earnt it.
