Why there is a demand for change and the reasons to be optimistic for the future

Wanted us to lose at home to City couple seasons back, NEA, more than glad we did too.

There are SOME exceptions to the rule.
No there isn't shame on you.
For me, I want Everton to win always - even in the deadest of dead rubbers. I even used to get het up at friendlies on occasion.

The city game a few years ago, I'm sure some wanted us to lose, but personally I wanted us to win and I know from speaking to people at the time both here and in the real actual world, that wanting us to get beat was the minority view but existed all the same.

I just couldn't bring myself Groucho

This is why I've told @The Esk to consider it a more long term project. We aren't going to spend stupidly in the summer in absolute terms. At least I hope not.

I think we should aim for three top quality signings every summer.

That in my view will make all the difference to Everton

Where have I said we will spend stupidly? No-one is talking about a mad dash for glory, least of all me.

I am saying though we will be properly resourced, have a new mange mentioned team and that the club should adopt a winning expectation and mentality, something not seen in L4 for many a year.

When I saw in previous threads some of the huge figures for spending and a presumption that we would spend it all this summer. I countered and said it should be spread out a little.

To mitigate risk but also allow us to acquire players that aren't available this summer.

It's this to which I refer.

I'm with Esk here, I feel someone will be recruited in the managers position who will be trusted to spend wisely, not waste.

Spending big chunks can be done wisely Bizzaro.

I will still fret.

I do not want us to do a Lerner. Nor the bad old days of Peter Johnson.

That's why I want us to avoid huge peaks and troughs. Just go for the steady but impressive upward incline

Take assurance from the fact that we have no evidence that he is going to be anything like Johnson or Lerner.

He has experience of the workings of a PL club, one of similar stature too.

I understand apprehension because we've seen Johnson here, and the likes of Venky's elsewhere, but this man comes with experience and ideas, and cash. Scrooge McDuck piles of cash.

Let's be positive unless we're given evidence to the contrary.

Scrouge McDuck is a good analogy for my conservative views on how to run a football club.

At least in spending terms. I absolutely do not ever want to see Everton turn into Villa. QPR. Portsmouth. Etc

Some big outlays will be necessary though.

We cant do it all on 50p goodwill.

But still.

It has me fretting. Sleepless nights too.

I appreciate DD said about cracking a few eggs to make an omelette.

I'll be watching for the first signs of trouble Lerner style if I think it's not right or something untoward is happening with structuring the spending

What is Lerner style spending ?

I have always believed that a football club was a living breathing thing. A thing that can't stand still but is always in a state of flux. You are improving or you are in decline.
Players are either gaining experience or are past their best, your tactics are evolving or have been "found out" by your opponents and they are devising a method to beat you.
You are seeking your best players or you are buying to strengthen.
The questioner asks why change, we have no choice, change is happening to us and around us. To try and stand still is to decline and we haven't much wriggle room. Any more decline in status looks like relegation. We have no choice on change, only change for change the better or change for the worse.
Why optimism, we are Everton. Question answered.

Unsustainable spending Esk.

Both on fees and wages.

That which can't be sustained by the club long term.

Lerner spent against a background of increasing operating losses as costs exceeded growth in income.

It is almost impossible for any premier league club to do the same at the operating level due to the size of the increase in broadcasting revenues.

Villa bought very badly and could not use the get out of jail card in accounting terms of regularly selling a player to cover losses (one of the quirks of football accounting).
