Not sure about this myself. This is such a crucial position and we should be looking to improve it. Howard will be gone and Joel left as our keeper in summer.

We either go and spend big on a Butland type OR we go for a Jordan Pickford type off Sunderland (i.e the new butland) OR a foreign keeper with a lot of potential who if he fails we still have Joel.

Either way who we sign should be better than Joel or potentially miles better....shouldnt sign a 2nd choice.

Butland 20 million plus no chance Stoke would sell a future England no 1 ok
 
in the interview on the OS the guy from everton asks

'how do you feel now, knowing your robertos first choice goalkeeper'

hopefully he knows something.

I agree and I'm not in any advocating in any way, shape or form that it should be Howard contesting for the first choice keeper's jersey.

By long term first choice keeper, I mean it'll be either Robles or a replacement for Howard who is brought in during the summer.

For me it's only the latter that is up for debate. Hopefully Joel can permanently cement his place the squad for the foreseeable future, but we'll see.

If i was Butland id see Jags, Baines and Stones as fellow England players in the defence and think that may play a part in England selection..then see Barkley and Cleverley as other infernationals for more exposure.

For Stoke, the england manager is solely going there to watch him.

This is one of the biggest managerial decisions for Martinez. Does he stick with Joel and go for a young keeper to possibly dislodge him OR an experienced backup...

Or does he go to the board, tell them he wants to have the £50mil tv additional revenue for transfer fees and move on a heap of deadwood for wages....

Then launch a bid £20-30mil for Butland....this is what i would do as with Butland or someone of that quality it could mean champions league and at the very least 10 years of extra placing money....

Key would be Butland pushing for the move.

Robles deserves his place after 3 clean sheets does he forget that Joel did this last season, and claimed publicly tim is my no 1 to then come back in and produce horrendous form -RM is off the radar sometimes!

If I was Butland I would turn us down like he did when he was sold for 4 million as he knew the no 1 jersey would stay in the hands of Tim so why would he leave a richer club and come to us like it or not Stoke have more funds than us!
Dithering dave did not pursue a quality keeper in Butland for 4 million??????
