Roberto Martinez discussion

He's been here for two weeks.
He's on £60k a week.
He can't even do 10 mins as a sub.
Love modern football.

You have a problem with clubs buying a player that will cost them over £20 million pounds in the long term and then making sure they treat them right to ensure a long term return?

A broken clock is right twice a day. Don't give a crap what Barton has to say.

Say those words are spoken by Peter Reid would you then? So it not that he is wrong you just don't like him? I know what you mean to be honest, I've thought he was an idiot for years but its good to see even someone with his mental capacity can see right through Martinez.

I doubt we'll get past the quarter final in the cup barring something special so I'm pretty keen to see what happens at Anfield this year.

Pretty resigned to us finishing below 10th, if that happens then a win that place will soften the blow.

The personal insults pile up. A clear sign that there's nothing more solid behind the usual fuming and bluster.

Martinez safe and sound and destined for two more seasons.

Settle down to it lads, you'll do yourselve's a mischief.

If we werent robbed of points this season and had terrible luck we'd have gained 6pts at least and be above united.

Im not sure if people are even factoring that in as its basic common sense. Also the team will have a years more experience and a new keeper coming in for next season.

The smart money is on top 4 next season.

Even Joey-bloody-Barton is spot on with his analysis. Well, its only what's been said in this thread a billion times but still:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03jp7f4

He isnt though is he? Hes jumping on the bandwagon.

How many games have we actually been turned over / well beaten this season, i can only think of Utd after Howards passing...

We "could" EASILY have taken 6pts more but for lots of factors, luck, bad refs, injuries to Besic/McCarthy etc then we would be sat in 5th position and NO ONE would be saying a peep.

Now, with that said if we had a top keeper rather than Howard we'd likely be 10pts+ better off even with all these other factors.

Our "REAL" position this year "should" be 5th right now but for the keeper, injuries, refs and bad luck.

This is pretty obvious.

i do feel sorry for fans watching home games as they pay the money and havent seen results....im sure if we were 5th though they wouldnt be too bothered this season. Thing is that the season isnt over yet and were only 6pts off hitting 5th after a season where almost everything has gone wrong for us.

Barton and others should be saying how exciting it is to have the quality of these players and what a good job Martinez is doing in developing them + how close we are to having a top side....Moyes NEVER had a top YOUNG side to last us...Martinez is building for the long term, just look at the ages of his main signings.

The fact is that if we had 6pts more (and we should have had far more) then Martinez would be getting alot of praise for changing our style and building a dynasty.

Instead hes getting cretins like Joey Barton take pops at him.

As for losing players, lukaku and others he has spent money on would pretty much all double what we spent on them and he would sign top replacements as shown so far.

Im amazed how no one can see this.

I said this to the ark fella today (who wants Martinez sacked). You can't say he hasn't spent well. Kone has been ropey, other than that they've all worked out. Most Kopites think 50% success rate on 20 million plus players is a great return.

It's odd you mention Moyes really. There are some parallels. I always thought Moyes built excellent squads on his budget but failed to get the best out of them. The same is true for Martinez really. He has built a brilliant squad who at present he is struggling to get the best out of.

He has spent more money than Moyes. But these things are relative. To the rest of the league we remain around half way in terms of money spent and wage bill.

Of all the things really anyway can say about either Moyes or Martinez, you can't say we don't spend money wisely. We obviously have a very strong scouting network who deserve a lot of credit!

The thing is, where are we EXPECTED to finish?

Theres no depth in key areas and no quality keeper.

Theres been key injuries.

Refs doing us over.

Bad luck in not finishing teams off e.g WBA/Norwich.

If you remove the wages on players left by Moyes who we couldnt shift until this summer we would probably be mid table....

On paper the first eleven should be top 6. They still have years to gsin experience and develop (stones/barkley/deulofeu/lukaku and even mccarthy)

If we were 5th now (which we could be if we had beaten WBA and one other team so no stretch) then would Martinez be getting such stick = NO.

However people paying money to watch home games prefer Moyes record at home i think as opposed to the better football on show...so its clouding their opinions.

in my opinion anything top 6 and we are OVERachieving this season.

Next season with a top GK, new CM and competition for Lukaku is the time to judge him. He has needed to spend what he has where he can and this summer has the opportunity with money and players out of contract to do so.

GK - Howard
LB - Garbutt
CB - Distin
RB - Hibbert
CM - Gibson
LM - Pienaar
CM- Osman
AM - Naismith
AM - McAleny
CF - Anichebe
CF - Naismith

Left by Moyes....

Gk -- Robles
LB - Galloway
LCB - Mori / Foulds
RCB - Stones (developed by Martinez)
RB - Holgate
DM - McCarthy
CM - Besic
AM - Barkley (developed by Martinez) / Tarashaj
LF - Niasse / Cleverley
CF - Lukaku
RW - Deulofeu

Ive only included the players here hes signed for te long term. Look at the total inexperience there and ages of the players...all signed as part of a restructuring plan and a change of style/system all the while needing to keep the old players happy.

Moyes left Jags,Baines,Coleman,Stones,Barkley and Fellaini and Mirallas with any quality so hes hardly left anything other than a major rebuilding job

Moues basically left us in a similar position to what SAF left him at Man Utd. An ageing team with a sprinkle of quality....theyve done £250mil+ on players and but for a few factors we would be above them.

All this achieved within a couple of seasons + if we sold ANY of these new players in summer we would make an enormous profit .

I hope RM is given every chance to get it right with whoever is Chairman.

RM has been the biz in the transfer market and we have got an exciting team. One of the frustrations this season however has been his ability to do better on the pitch despite being a better team than the opposition in most cases.

Howard is obviously the number one factor. No. 2 has been our inability to take a proper corner. No 3 has been our failure to defend properly. No 4 our reluctance to shoot from outside the area. And unfortunately all these weaknesses are exactly the same as last season.

What are you chatting Zatman??

Honestly, that Moyes team.

Did you think, I know, lets pick the worst possible team I can muster.

Moyes last team was :

Howard
Coleman - Jags - Distin - Baines
Felli - Gibson
Mirallas - Naismith - Pienaar
Victor
5 players from that team are still with the club and very much first team players, 2 players are still at the club and are worthless, 3 players were sold for a combined fee of 44m, 1 player left for free.

Martinez has signed 20 players for 100m in his 3 years at the club, just love the way people twist Stones and Barkley towards Martinez, you cant have them, they belong to Moyes, team Martinez also cant have Lukaku, his signing was only made possible by the sale of Felli, who also belongs to Moyes. So factor in the Moyes team above, which team would win, that 1 or :

Robles
Holgate - Mori - Foulds - Barry
Besic - McCarthy
Geri ----------------- Naisse
Kone - Tarashjai
Distin of 3 years ago would have put Kone in his pocket, Besic would get sent off for chinning Felli for elbowing him, Mirallas would run the 2 fullbacks all over the park allowing Naismith to score for fun while Victor stood there sulking like the big fanny he is.

Basically, Moyes team would win, 4-0, cos Martinez team cant defend.

Its true, Moyes left an ageing squad, Martinez has had 5 windows and 100m to fix that issue, guess what hes done, he gave a 35 year old Goalkeeper a 2 year contract extension, meaning he would be at the club till the age of 39, he gave a 32 year old Gareth Barry a 3 year contract, he also gave a 1 year extension to 36 year old Distin and signed 29 year old Arouna Kone an a 3 year contract with a 12month extension, not to mention giving 32 year old Tony Hibbert a 2 year contract. (Tired, so my ages and lengths of contract may not be 100%)

I bet that hurts Zatman, read it and weep. Where is your God NOW.

Yes good post. For me, only Lukaku and Deulofeu. All the others Martinez has brought in we have seen are all welcome to move on as we can replace them with better.
Again for those ready to attack, I'm not saying they are all duds. I'm saying if we are to be a top team they need to be replaced in the starting 11.
Besic is the one that I exclude because the lad has shown real talent but can't stay on the park long enough unfortunately.
