Bryan Oviedo

I think the Baines shout for automatic selection is nostalgia now.

We have three on an equal footing for that position atm: Baines, Oviedo and Galloway. Baines is about the worst defender of the three. For that reason (given our self imploding tendency at the back) I'd have him down the pecking order.
Galloway has a while to go before he can top baines surely.

A bit earlier in the season I might have agreed with you. But since he has come back from injury I think his defending has improved.
He leaves us exposed. I dont think he's great at funnelling back further upfield and we get picked off on the break.

To me mind the most solid we've looked all season was back in September/early October with a flatter back four that included Galloway and Browning.

I feel we need to be looking at that approach again.

I think he's underrated defensively. A fair point though Oviedo is very solid defensively. I don't see it yet with Galloway but alternatively I really like Garbutt so swings and roundabouts.

One of the things I like about Martinez (it's not in vogue to praise him) is he knows how to utilise a squad. There is none of this "if you're not in my first team you are not needed" stuff that you got with say a Moyes or a Rodgers. I think Martinez will value his experience in and around the dressing room. I also think he will rotate him more and keep him fresh as well as using Baines more innovatively in different positions. I wouldn't be surprised to see him deployed in midfield wide or centrally going forward.

I heard people saying we made a mistake not keeping Cahill in a squad role. I am inclined to agree now. The same goes for Baines. England internationals needs to be utilised, even if they can't play every game.

As for Oviedo he is a very good back up. He is also a very adept squad man, can fill in at right back and across the midfield and I have never really seen him let us down. I hope he can have an injury free run and can get a new contract.

My own guy feeling is Garbutt may fill the role as a specialist but I have no issues with Oviedo when playing direct wingers as he is very adept at that.

Not going to be enough aggro in the Martinez thread tonight huh Dave so decided to stick the knife into Leighton? lol

Bry was boss tonight, love him and he did a couple of excellent corners as well.

Baines to midfield: much mooted, not tried. Maybe it is his position now. But we have lots of competition in that area.

Best man for the job, imo.

Baines gets a free ride pretty much. He shouldn't though. He's not what's required in this team at the moment.

You might be right. I think it isn't nostalgia with Baines but the constant checking and pass square/back from Galloway and (now) Coleman makes you think of what we lose going forward. If it would lead to clean sheets I would be for it, but it hasn't so far and we have missed that attack down the left as well as the right. And Galloway also left himself out of position (although I think he did magnificently for a young player being brought into the team).

played great tonight ! 8 out of 10 for me ! just one of those players even if he has a bad game you still like him !

I am not sure anybody has really nailed down the left wing slot, especially considering Martinez likes one flying winger and then one more creative clever player (operating from the left).

Likewise Barry's game time will increasingly need to be managed, but he is a very important player for us. I could easily see a rotation with Baines? Who knows. I think all I will say though is Martinez is quite good at utilising his squad and being inventive with different roles for players. I would like to see Baines stay and it would be good if his workload was reduced.

I know some fans like to see players once they turn a certain age bombed out, it's far more sensible to reduce game load. They still have a lot to offer.

Maybe Niasse on the left changes matters? He's supposedly a work horse as well as a goal getter. That could be the difference to Baines being in the team and not losing shape.

He has a lot to offer the first team at LB. But my issue is that he shouldn't be in there at this moment when we need to get bodies behind the ball and defend well, and that he shouldn't be automatically starting. He just isn't out there in front of Oviedo for that type of respect.

Man of the match for me tonight, never put a foot wrong, defended solidly without a lot of support, got forward without much support. Much better than Coleman tonight
