Roberto Martinez discussion

How do you know for a fact we're staying in mid-table? There's 15 games left in the league. That's a possible 45 points. Obviously, we ain't gonna win them all. But there is just as much chance, at this point, of us finishing 7th as there is 17th. It's in the balance.

Considering anything outside of european places and above relegation is generally considered mid table it's a decent assumption that we're staying in mid table. If we don't get Champions or Europa League football then Lukaku, Stones etc are more than likely going to leave. I don't think I'm being pessimistic with that judgement, just realistic.

You dont seem to understand that we have not got £500mil to buy a squad full of superstars.

Due to this we have a blend of young players with immense potential and some old codgers like Howard / Jags / Barry and Kone +8 or 9 others left over from moyes reign and short term stopgaps.

Either we follow this model OR sign a load of mid level players to get top 6 each season....with this model as it keeps being built then it could achieve top 4.

This selling Stones and Lukaku bizarre argument you keep pedalling makes zero sense. These are just two players at the end of the day, you need to see the whole vision which includes 8 players at the moment and could increase in the summer again.

You seem to want immediate success but this is not possible when comparing money spent and also the fact that these players will be inconsistent and the older ones will not be at their prime.

In a couple of seasons we should have a tremendous squad and instead of being excited you seem to think that they will all miraculously "click"OR that all of these stars will leave.

There is no evidence of that at all.
Fantastic post Zat

Jonjo Shelvey.
Andros Townsend
Eman Adebayor
Charlie Austin

None of these players would get in the top 5/6 teams in the country.

Which of McCarthy, Deulofeu, Barkley, Lukaku, Stones wouldn't get in the top 5/6 teams?
townsend playing for a relegation threatened club mate.
No-one wanted adeybyor
Austin wasn't really in demand either.

Point is mate, if their clubs bomb, does that makes them poor players? Are Leicesters players suddenly top class for being at the top? No such thing as a mid level player, a few wins or losses changes that status instantly. either you are a top player, or you aren't

What we as fans think really doesn't matter to be honest.

Not strictly true. Not even our board could carry on as if nothing was happening with the kind of reaction Martinez will start getting at Goodison if results don't pick up from tonight.

No excuses will wash (although no doubt the apologists on here will try) - if we don't get the 3 points tonight. I fully expect us to win. But if the unthinkable happens and we don't beat a side in the bottom 3 at home, then after the Swansea defeat I can't imagine how RM could possibly be defended.

The heat will be on tonight on Martinez and the team and the fans won't make it easier by supporting the players either. The players and the manager will be alone tonight until they are in front. Newcastle will want the Everton fans groans and booing.

The issue will be, newcastle scoring first. If they do that then the mood of the ground will nose dive and it will take a lot (or a quick) response to get them back again.

I wonder how many going the game aren't as confident as they were a few months ago about beating one of the bottom 3?

Why didn't these inconsistent kids stop us breaking our record points total in 2013 but......

that was a long post to make a point and look for an answer when you already have your answer above.

inconsistent whether over one season or 3 seasons is still inconsistent, and most people agree that young players will be inconsistent, so yes it is a valid factor in why we are not doing so great. one of many but valid and important.

totally agree Zat, and I don´t think giving an example of some other club where the youngsters are currently more consistent and its working decently negates the fact that in general young players will be inconsistent and that the policy the manager is employing does need patience.

....having said all that we all of course do acknowledge that maybe the manager will be shown as not the right guy and will leave earlier than his contracted time, but I don´t think that time is now.
