Not of all time but certainly over the pasr decade or 2, criminally underrated player. If he was foreign everyone would be fapping themselves silly. One of the players you don't realize is that good til he plays for you
agree with that. Look at all the media drooling over Matic at Chelsea last season for example.

Been one of the clubs best players this season. Perfect playing once a week. Be absolute diabolical next season mind if the club somehow manage to drop captain flappy and surge up the league as a result and thus getting a Europa league spot. He can't play on A Thursday then A Sunday regularly anymore.

I don't think he's alone in that. There's loads of players in the league who struggle with the EL travelling.

I wonder if it's actually the fatigue from travelling that does them in rather than the games - maybe two home games would be ok. Maybe not.

He's been good this season mind.

I posted earlier that he has managed to up his performance levels this season and he has also played more minutes than at the same stage last season. Less traveling and no injuries have probably helped but their is something inside that has enabled him to enjoy this longevity. He will, barring injuries, overtake Lampard and Giggs and become the Premier League's highest-appearing player next season.

He is giving it a darn good go though - Dec 1st to Jan 6th (37 days) he played the full 90 for 8 matches, which works out to be a game less then every 5 days.

Most of them he was voted as one of the best performancers on the pitch including tough, energetic games like Spurs/City that came at the end of the demanding run that included him playing all 5 of our November games.

It would be naive to think that he can maintain that type of schedule with the same level of performance. Not just because of his age, I would have similar concerns for Lukaku. I would love to see either of them get a proper rest at some point.

Fully agree, Ross has had a lot of gametime as well so a rest might do him some good as well.

Just think it crazy that a 34 year old, who by virtue of his position tends to be very high in our distance covered and tackles (which often lead to playing with knocks) stats is still able to be performing at any level let alone the one he is doing.

He's a very experienced prem player. He's well and truly used to the chrimbo period. Throw in the extra Europa games from last season and he'd probably struggle again.

I doubt he'd keep the recent schedule up for a whole season, but thankfully, he won't have to.

Tbh am beginning to wonder if more of the problem last year might have been down to his ankle injury that he was rushed back from rather than the game time although that obviously is a factor for any player.

Absolutely. There's a lot more than just tired legs at play under the general umbrella terms of 'fatigue' and 'freshness.'
