Tim Howard

Hes had good seasons but hes never been a top 4 goalie and hes always made mistake, the last 2-3 seasons hes got worse. He the weak link in our team and needs dropping. Is Robles the answer? Dont no yet but he cant be worse than Howard

He should not be selected in the team them = simple for RM???????

Tim Howard is fair game in my eyes. He hasn't played well enough for a long enough period to warrant a debate on his inclusion.

It's the fact that his form has been consistently not good enough, with his age, that means the criticism should be aimed solely at the manager - not at Howard.

I'm not saying I don't get angry if his flaps or whatever, but him catching a ball and getting cheered is just ridiculous. That's my only point. What you reckon Joe?

Nev says what he thinks and won't bow to the club if he feels they're not doing themselves or the fans justice. I like that.

Fair enough that some won't like that, but we have plenty of Everton heroes towing the club line as it is.
Lets be honest though, as great as he was for us Nev is as bright as black paint and a lot of what he says is bollox.

Bingo, and this is the bit I dislike about our fanbase (other clubs may have the same thing but I don't care)...

we get a good player in who gives us good service. We respect and appreciate that service until they begin to deteriorate. From this point we then start to belittle them and forget the previous 'x' years.

Happened with Neville
Happened with Osman
Happening with Howard

I can't be bothered going further back because my jacket potato is going cold but it's clear that these players and their abilities did/have dwindled due to the natural ageing process.

If you want to blame someone (not sure why you would as these players bring more to the table than just on-field performances) then blame Moyes, blame Martinez - these are the people picking them.

The whole cheering Howard when he caught the ball was one of the most bizarre things i've witnessed from a bunch of absolute whoppers.

Fair point but can clearly remember all three of Osman, neville and Howard coming out with statements or interviews that annoyed a huge amount of the fanbase

Insulting the fans or trying to make out that we are a small club that should be happy with a top half finish won't win many people over and will get them dog's abuse and rightly so

As for all the service they have given the club etc, sorry but they are hardly doing it for free, all three have become multi millionaires and are/have raked home 40-50k plus per week from the club, pretty sure their is loads of people who get much worse abuse at work every single day for minimum wage

Mike, I respect you as you know, and it's clear which side of the fence you sit on with this debate.

But surely you can concede he was good in Martinez's first season? Last year not good, and this year not good.

Does the blame not lie with the manager if anyone? Or is it right to ridicule a player who, whilst not meeting expectations, is not doing it on purpose?

He just wasn't as bad in that first season as he has been in the past two. Or he didn't look as bad anyway, as we were generally solid as a team. He still had his moments that season though, throwing the ball in his own net against Chelsea, the City game at home (although I'll forgive him there), Anfield when he mindlessly came running 40 yards out of his goal, just off the top of my head. I remember he made a great penalty save at Villa Park though, which is a more positive contribution than everything he's done in the past two seasons combined. He was absolute bog in Moyes' last season as well by the way

Hes arrogant, he comes out with interviews and comments like all is well and our opinions don't count etc. And then on top of that hes got the cheek to give backchat to the fans

Fair play lads, all about opinions.

I would say though that none of you have concretely said who you think is more to blame for Howard getting...well...old and still playing in this team looking to one day break into the top 4.

Howard?

Or

Martinez?

I recon he upsets our defence with his positioning on his line, and most saves now seem to be with his legs seldom goes down to an attackers feet cleanly he is over the hill and has been for the last 18 months - his main weakness is crosses he is costing us points Robles did simple thing making them look easy , and has more agility hence the greta save in the second half - in other words Tim is 18 months too late of being dropped - then we would know if Robles was good enough if he had come on leaps , and bounds we would just be looking for a no 2 keeper now ie saving us money in the transfer market!
The three clean sheets Robles kept no way should Tim just have come back in the team , and when he did he was calamitous to say the least eg the last seasons Leicester home game = being dropped - never happens!

Martinez?

Martinez ultimately is responsible for any player playing mate, goes without saying really.

Howard though with his endless self promotion, ego and basic disregard for 'ALL' fans not just ones who give him stick deserves to be slated to the heavens, long as he is drawing a 40-50k pay check each week which is ultimately being paid for due to those fans he should keep his mouth firmly shut from further insulting them.

End of the day, Martinez has really gone down the safe option by sticking with him, an experienced international, years of playing at the top flight, its taken this long for the mainstream media to even really start running any stories criticizing the decision, if he'd gone with Robles and he'd had a few bad games rather than a few bad seasons then Martinez would have been crucified in the media over it, doesn't make the decision any more correct but makes it a little more understandable why he has gone with Howard

Don't forget Joey, he shuts his eyes!
