Roberto Martinez discussion

I watch Everton to see us WIN, not to be entertained.
If in the process of winning i AM entertained then that`s the cherry on top of the cake.
Seems to me some posters on here are happy to see swashbuckling football and don`t care too much if we lose by the odd goal in seven every week.
Each to their own i suppose but to me that viewpoint is almost as delusional as the manager.
I want to win with style and entertaining football, I think most people will sit in that camp
Strange thing to say you don't want to be entertained...

Amazing how neither you or @daz4matty can write so many posts in here but not list down the squad Moyes left Martinez. Those are the best squad players behind the first 11 he left.

Absolute dross.

List down 2 players for each position which Moyes left him with and see for yourself.

Otherwise admit youre talking poppycock.

You're calling yourself out here mate. I just listed the players you left out of your original subjective slating. I've no problem with Moyes' final squad bring written down on here, the more facts committed to paper the better.

Like a lot of Moyes' squads it had talent but not much depth. Our financial situation was different but the weaknesses in it were obvious. I'm not arguing that this current squad is not better. It is, by a long way, aided nicely by an improved financial picture, but to claim Martinez got left a dud squad is wrong. There was very good quality in it which he has continued to build his first 11 around. The argument of why our league position hasn't reflected the improvement in our squad is an interesting one though. Who deserves criticism for this? The same person who deserves credit for bringing the squad together.

Yes

Improvement you say?

[signed by]

No. Position Player
1 GK Joel Robles - [Martinez] Jury very much still out
2 DF Tony Hibbert - Alas, poor Tony, never even plays
3 DF Leighton Baines - [Moyes] nowhere near the player he was
4 MF Darron Gibson - [Moyes] Good lord
5 DF John Stones - [Moyes] Boss
6 DF Phil Jagielka (captain) - [Moyes] doesn't get credit he deserves, good player
7 MF Aiden McGeady - [Martinez] Utter, utter, utter tosh. Once described by Davek as a 'car crash of a signing'
8 MF Bryan Oviedo - [Martinez] decent squad player, very unlucky
9 FW Arouna Koné [Martinez] has well and truly found his form again after those bursts against Villa and Sunderland
10 FW Romelu Lukaku [Martinez] Best signing this club has made since the 80s, edging out Nigel Martyn
11 FW Kevin Mirallas [Moyes] Fantastic player with whom the manager has a farcical agenda
12 MF Aaron Lennon [Martinez] Good player, no surprise we look more secure with him in the side. Unlucky to be dropped.
14 FW Steven Naismith [Moyes] utter, utter horror. The backpass yesterday said it all.
15 MF Tom Cleverley [Martinez] Agonisingly average.
16 MF James McCarthy [Martinez] Great player.
No. Position Player
17 MF Muhamed Bešić [Martinez] Bizarrely frozen out. And yet contributed to one of our only wins recently... then dropped.
18 MF Gareth Barry (third-captain) [Martinez] lost form last season but brilliant player.
19 FW Gerard Deulofeu [Martinez] Superb signing. Great player.
20 MF Ross Barkley Phenomenal Inevitably.
21 MF Leon Osman (vice-captain) Has conned a living for a very, very long time.
22 MF Steven Pienaar [Moyes] Changed the way Everton played football when he arrived. The best football brain in the squad.
23 DF Séamus Coleman [Moyes] In and out of form, but on his day one of the best RBs in the league.
24 GK Tim Howard [Moyes] Utter, utter, utter tosh and a bizarre blind spot for a manager who has a track record for dropping senior GKs.
25 DF Ramiro Funes Mori [Martinez] £9.5m white elephant. Mistake a match. Goals conceded since his Chelsea debut terrifying.
27 DF Tyias Browning [Martinez] Looks a good player
28 FW Leandro Rodríguez [Martinez] Jury is out. Early reports of him being the new Javier Hernandez (check the thread) seem a bit premature.
30 DF Mason Holgate [Martinez] No idea yet
32 DF Brendan Galloway [Martinez] Looks decent, should be in at CB with Stones.
35 FW Conor McAleny Won't make it
38 DF Matthew Pennington No idea.

Not what you'd call

when a number of the signings have been iffy and a lot of the deadwood hasn't been moved on.

Disagree/further elaboration on a few of those mate

Baines - has been aging and had injury problems. His 2012/13 form was amazing. Still managed 9 assists last season and was for a while our only focal point in attack but I worry it'll only come in fits and starts

Mirallas - scores goals but often goes walkabout. Will have a great game, then a poo game. Gets better the more he doesn't play

Lennon - agree, really want him to have a run in the team now

Cleverley - I think he is a confidence player and his assist to Lukaku yesterday showed what he can do. Needs to work out if he plays deep or further up.

Besic - positionally awful.

Pienaar - held together with dry spaghetti

Naismith - his best form for us came up top, putting him on the wing simply doesn' work.

Funes Mori - Think he's been playing better than Stones actually.

I think most of us would prefer to find a balance mate. I do love the attacking style but the defence makes me tear my hair out. If we find balance what a difference it will make. Whether RM can do this the jury is out.

Can't you make the connection between it being such an open season, you praising Spurs for doing well, and us only being 9 points behind them in when they lay in 3rd?

'Only 9 points'. You do realise that's 1/6th of our current projected season's total. An absolutely huge amount of points to claw back for a team who have not won back to back for such a long time.

Of course its far better...here is where we are now

GK-- ??? /???
LB -- Baines / Garbutt
LCB -- Jagielka /Mori /Galloway
RCB -- Stones / Browning / Holgate(?)
RB -- Coleman / Pennington
DM -- Barry / McCarthy / Besic
CM -- ??? / Cleverley
AM -- Barkley / ???
LW -- ??? / ???
CF -- Lukaku / ???
RW -- Deulofeu / Lennon

Pennington and Browning we dont know yet and Holgate seems to be the next to come through.

This omits:
Howard -- Rubbish
Robles -- signed as backup
Hibbert -- finished
Oviedo -- perma crocked
Gibson -- where to start with him
Pienaar - finished
Kone -- poor signing
Mirallas --out the door
Naismith -- out the door
McAleny -- out the door
McGeady-- poor signing

Quite clearly 3 first eleven starters need signing and 4 players to compete with them...the 3 players are in crucial positions.

Now, in the next 2 windows if he hasnt improved these areas then i'll worry but at the moment its quite obvious hes improved the quality of the squad and first eleven considerably.

Moyes left a totally unbalanced squad with some terrible players who Martinez has been gradually replacing window on window.

No my brothel bothering friend, it looks like an improvement to the first team, but next to nothing done with the squad, which was your criticism of what the Ginger Whinger left behind.

Just because there are more under 22s for you to get yourself into a lather over doesn't make it better.

He had my full support til the last few weeks. He's too stubborn, and personally I think he won't change. Unless he shows that he can change (I mean visibly tightening the defence between now and the end of the season, employing a defensive coach etc) we have to assume he can't/won't do it. In that case, we probably have one more chance with this squad minus stones and Lukaku probably. In this situation I don't want him to spend that money that comes in, as it's our best maybe only chance to build a decent team again with the amount we'd generate and I frankly don't trust him with it.

We need to give someone who can balance defence and attack a go with whatever is left of this squad before it disappears and the club drops further into mid table obscurity, and possibly worse.

I'll leave you with this...Martinez managing this squad without Lukaku gets us relegated

Your upside down posting is weird.
Maybe we can't be bothered to do the homework you set us but we are right, the facts prove it

Your right the idea is to win and try and get trophies.

Are they not FIRST ELEVEN players?

What about the SQUAD players backing them up...

Youre naming the BEST PLAYERS...how you name Stones and Barkley there is pretty odd as Moyes never played them.

Off the top of my head: Jagielka Stones Baines Coleman Distin Oviedo Barkley Mirallas Naismith Fellaini. Yep, absolute rubbish inheritance, 3/4 of an England back 4, best full backs in the league, best young midfielder in England, 27 mill rated Belgian international, two attacking players capable of double figures. Absolute rubbish the lot of them (amazing how many he's kept around really)

Ah, thanks very much Thai Terroriser Zatty.

So in 2 and a half seasons, he's failed to;

Sort the goalkeeper out, pretty crucial position
Do better at LB than the ones already in situ
Bring in one utterly useless player and a youngster as backup to our senior CB
Not bring in a senior CB of any note (Alcaraz was his first attempt... wow)
We play with two DMs as you well know, and to shoe-horn the average Cleverley into the team he keeps dropping Ross Barkley into this position to accommodate him, nullifying his attacking capability. Cleverley goes off, Ross gets further forward, sets up the third. Not complicated.
Completely failed to solve the left side of midfield - despite trying McGeady, Kone, Naismith, Barkley, Cleverley etc out there.
He's got one functioning CF and thank god he's as good as Lukaku is.

'Much better'.
