Roberto Martinez discussion

I'm not suggesting he is the best. He us very good at developing individual players, he can produce the most exhilarating football but he has a blind eye to his weaknesses, hence my comments on recruiting him in the first place.

He's about as good as we could get, but he's not good enough for a club with the ambitions the majority of supporters harbour.

Interesting

Who could we say has developed and improved?

Howard - no
Coleman - no
Baines - No
Stones - Yes
Funes Mori - can't get much worse
Barry - no
McCarthy - Yes
Barkley - Yes
Kone - no
Lukaku - yes
Mirallas - no
Del - yes
Osman - no
Hibbert - Weirdly, yes
Gibson - No
Galloway - yes
Browning - yes
Cleverley - as average as the day he arrived

For me, that's a very, very mixed track record of developing players

We're so good when we attack, but we're so poor in defence and I'm afraid the buck has to stop with Martinez. We have very capable defenders, so it's not just down to personnel

Martinez has a terrible blind spot when it comes to defending and he doesn't seem prepared to get another coach in to help him with it

If Lukaku turned round tomorrow and asked to leave, I honestly couldn't blame him

He's having the season of his life and is in very real danger of ending up with nothing at the end of it due to defensive frailties that he has no control over

Oh no doubt we are a long way off. I'm just trying to look at this with a bigger picture view for the long term.

I will disagree with your last point. It may appear that way at the moment, and you might ultimately end up being right, but I think we are incredibly close.

I mean I think we can win trophys with this team (this year even). I think we can qualify for europe again with this team (this year even).

But incredibly close to winning the league? Nah.

your CM achievements pail in significance to what i've achieved on FM mate!

but seriously, i wouldn't go around claiming to be "able to do a better job" than someone who's won the FA Cup with minnows.

So has this slobbery-chopped beaut, and I wouldn't want this meff near the job

Brought through a young England CB and bought a young Argentinian international; brought through a young CB and adapted him to LB. Key word here is young. They need to learn quickly to shut up shop.
Agree with all that mate. But the whole stubbornness with Howard is becoming rather laughable now isn't it?

Most of younger players have improved whereas the more experienced have stagnaited.

The likes of Gibson, Osman , Hibbert though should have been moved on 3 years ago

All this business about should be better than Stoke, Palace, West Ham and Watford etc is baffling....we're at the halfway stage and there's about 4-5 points difference between the lot of them. When Dancing Brave won the Arc he wasn't mentioned until the final furlong....just saying like.
Yeah and when he was runner up in the derby......guess what?.....he wasn't mentioned until the final furlong and we all know what happened to greville starkey!!!

Another highly frustrating yet all too c'mon performance. There is no doubt in the modern game that full backs provide width. However once again looking at us yet again today, Coleman at times was playing like a right winger. Just watched the game again is there any other full back that gets in the opponents penalty area as much as seamus, I can't think of one. But the point I'm making if we lose possession stones is being dragged out of the centre to fill in the gaps created by Coleman, is it any wonder we are so suspectible to goals on the counter attack. This is madness. Likewise
Galloway is encouraged to get forward on the left and mori is pulled out of position. I actually felt sorry for Galloway today as kone seemed to be all over the pitch and he had little cover. I dread to think what De Bryne and sterling will do to us if we comitt our full backs forward against them.
